Default Nav dvd update problem

Well, I just spent $500 to buy two new DVD update discs for my two vehicles and neither of them work. Is there some trick to performing the update that someone on here would know? Here is what I have tried:

1. Power on ignition with current map being displayed: remove old disc, insert new one - goes into a "Performing DVD check" mode that sits there endlessly (after 10 minutes I gave up). Shutting the key off and back on at this point gives an "unable to read dvd" error. Putting the old one back in without even cycling power brings up the old map without problem.

2. Insert new dvd from the get-go, power off, power on - unable to read from DVD error. Can reinsert old dvd and immediately brings up the current old map without problem.

3. Put in new dvd, turn everything off, remove battery cable, reconnect. Turn back on and get - no Map DVD in drive error - please insert map dvd (although the new one is in there). Ejecting and reinserting keeps saying NO dvd in drive. If I take it out and put the old one back in it reloads (with the do not power off system is reloading message) correctly and works great.

The new DVDs are version 4.1, old versions are 3.2. I have tried both discs in both vehicles and get the same results. The part numbers and such all look the same as the old discs except the newer versions. The outer case refers for installers to follow DVD PANT instructions from the Toyota dealer daily system, but of course I do not have access to that. I bought them from Steve at Carson Toyota so they are good.
