Audio & StereoTechnical discussions about factory or aftermarket audio and video systems.
This is a discussion thread titled "IPOD to '05 Tacoma Factory Stereo", within the Audio & Stereo forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Anyone have any guidance on hard-wiring an ipod to the factory '05 taco stereo? I understand BMW realizes how many ipods have been sold lately and is accomodating their cars for ipods. I have an FM modulator now and it sounds mediocre on clear days and terrible on overcast days. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!
in the tacoma audio thread bellow this one...it has been talked about. people have shown how they have wired it into the aux port. do some reading and all your answers will be there.
Thanks man! I guess I didn't do enough digging. For anyone else who may be interested in this, this is what I now know: The standard CD player comes with an aux port and to access this you press the Disc button twice. I have ordered an ipod module from ipod2car.com and purchased the toyota adapter harness they recommended. A little pricey, $200 for the module and $20 for the harness. A small price to pay for better sound considering the investment of an ipod and spending the time to put 5000 songs on it. I ordered it today and will keep you posted on how it works out. To get the factory stereo out, you pry up the HVAC controls (tough clips from what I've heard) and then unbolt the stereo. Again, I'll update this next week when I get my adapter and let you know for sure that it works.
wow sorry to hear you got hosed man http://www.logjamelectronics.com/perphipod2car.html
179 for the all new version of ipod2car. if you can cancel it do it. this website was in the other post i gave you. if you looked on ebay you could find it cheaper
This guy at g35ipod.com has done some really nice work on his own car, and has inspired me to do something as nice on my taco truck. I was browsing his installation gallery and low and behold, he has a message board with all types of people responding with installation photos, etc.
I haven't done it yet, I'll get my adapter Monday and take the radio out then. But, I read in the Tacoma Audio Thread mentioned above and it said to pry the heater/AC control panel off (i suggest you read what they said about this) and then the four bolts that hold the stereo in are exposed. Again, if you have any more questions, I'll post the outcome Monday night/Tue. morn and let everyone know who it went.
In response to Rockos, I may have jumped the gun a little but I don't think I got hosed tooooo bad. If you look at the harnesses required on logjam, (which I didn't see where they mentioned Tacos) you have to purchase one or two of them and then the $179 ipod2car. Again, I may have not done enough homework but after looking at those harnesses, one for $10 and one for $40, I think it will be a wash as to which company is cheaper. I used autosoundgear in FL. They guaranteed me that it would work or my money back and supplied the necessary wiring harness for the taco. I still had to buy the toyota harness that they recommended which costs $20. All in all, if it works $20 will not matter if I can do away with that rediculous FM modulator. I would love to know if anyone in Seattle is even able to use those things. On foggy or rainy days the thing sounds worse than AM sports stations!!!!
I'm trying to decide between the IPOD2CAR deal and the simpler AUX-TOY deal. As I understand it, the PIE adapter needs also the ipod- out- to-RCA cable. And it doesn't charge, and it can't control the ipod from the stereo steering wheel or stereo dash controls. But, it's alot cheaper. Like 59$ vs. 200$. I was thinking I could get a simple ipod DC charger for $20, and all I'm really missing is the stereo controls, which I don't really know if they'll work worth a crap anyway.
The IPOD2CAR deal sounds good, if it works as advertised. Except for the price.
Just not sure. MOST IMPORTANTLY, I don't know if there is a audio quality issue between the headphone jack and the power jack on the bottom of the pod. Any thoughts?
I use a 70-watt power inverter to power my laptop and charge some batteries when I'm on the road. I haven't shelled out the $$ for a car charger for my ipod yet - I'm wondering if I can use the regular household charger through the inverter. Anyone know if that is safe/doable? I'm figuring it'll work just fine but thought I'd ask around.
BTW, I'm almost finished with a mounting system for my ipod using a radio shack cell phone holder attached to a cordless phone belt clip which will clip onto the tray to the left of the HVAC controls. Cheap, small, secure, nothing permanent, no screws or adhesive.
