Default Definitive iPOD installation thread.

I've read all of the other iPOD threads and am just plain confused. All I want to do is have a charging mount for my iPOD in my 2005 DC Tundra and a direct line connection into the back of my single cd JBL 8 speaker system. CAn anyone telll me what's the best way to do it? Also, can I use my steering wheel audio controls with my iPOD hook up?

I'm so confused, PIE adaptors, Belkin adaptors, chargers, oh my!

What you are looking for is called the ipodtocar. You can get it at - peripheralelectronics.com. It will do all of the things you are looking for. As far as I know it will only fit the newer generation ipods (3rd gen and beyond) because of a different plug style. Hope this helps.

Using this, (http://www.logjamelectronics.com/perphipod2car.html), there is the following comment when you select the cable to go with a Toyota.

Toyota All 1998-2004 Connects to 12-pin connector in rear of radio - Some 2003-2004 4 X 4 models will require the P.I.E. TOY03-F/MM "Y" Harness (sold separately) AB-TOY

Would I have to buy the PIE Y harness as well? I just have the standard AM/FM/CD radio (no in-dash, or other, changer).

Okay. Now I'm looking at the iPod2Car, as it provides the function keys for the iPod through the radio interface. However, I'm still a bit confused, do I really need this 08695-00370 ($24) part from Toyota in order for it to work on an '05 Tacoma with the standard radio?

I have the same question except for my 2005 DC Tundra.

according to the installation instructions you will need to get toyota cable adapter, part #08695-00370 from the dealer for all 03-05 tundras and taco's.

Seems logical.

Next question is how hard is it to remove the stock radio to allow installation? Or does it even have to be removed?

Default Ipod2car in 05 Taco

I recently installed the ipod2car in my 05 taco, you do indeed have to have the cable from toyota. Even if you don't need it they will take it back with minimal restocking fee on a $20 cable. It works great, charges when its pulgged in, sounds 500% better than the fm mod and yes, any controls for moving track to track on a CD you can use with the ipod.

Hey. I'm getting the exact same truck you are tomorrow, except mine is a TRD Sport. Black was my first choice, but when they said they had a Silver coming in, I was all over that.

Anyway, got to get the cable, looks like.

Now, how did you install it? Can you provide some details of where you placed the box (iPod2Car), where you put the iPod (Console, I'm hoping). Were you able to install it without removing the stereo? If not, what was your method for removing it?

Also, does it turn the iPod on and off by itself? Oh, and where did you buy your iPod2Car?

I went and bought the Sony cassette adaptor that can plug into the iPOD. It sounds really good and I don't have to worry about the whole FM modulator thing. I found that with my iSKIN on my iPOD, it fits pretty good in that little gap beneath the ashtray. It doesn't move around when you turn. Additionally, my steering wheel volume works but since it's a cassette adaptor the change track button won't work so you have to use the iPOD if you want to skip a song.

The ony other drawback is that you have a thin black wire running from the cassette deck to the iPOD below it. But, on the other hand, you can use it in any car that has a cassette deck.

This will do until I decide to finally hardwire it into the back of my stereo.

That's true, if you have a cassette deck! I don't have any other option, unless going with the FM modulator, and I've been there, done that, and won't do it again. I pick up the truck tonight, so I'm going to have a look at it, and see if there is a way to get behind the dash, without pulling the radio out. My older cars have all been that way, but we'll have to see about the Taco.

I may head over to the parts department and see about getting a service manual, and I bet that tells you how to remove it.

I like the idea of putting the iPod away in the console, that way, if you are in a questionable part of town, you don't have to worry about leaving it in plain sight. Plus, with the controls through the radio, the only time you would need to use the iPod controls, would be if you wanted to change playlists.

Yes tape adapters work but you would be better off burning all of your songs onto cd and playing them that way as the quality from a tape adaptor is very poor. Actually you can buy a deck from a Scion and put it in your tundra to play MP3's. This way you can burn about 150 songs onto one CD. The ipod2car is superior to all other adaptors IMO because it uses the data port for connection instead of the headphone jack. It charges the ipod and allows you to control tracks from the deck. It also turns the ipod on and off with the vehicle. PIE and Biltz adaptors allow for decent sound quality, but you get none of the other benefits.
You do have to remove the stereo to install. Push the two center air vents up toward the sky and remove the hidden phillips screws behind them. Then pull off the three AC knobs and remove the screws behind. Once you have removed these screws (5 total) the center trim will pop off. You might have to pull on it a bit. You will then see the mounting bolts for the deck. 4 - 10mm bolts and you are there.

Wow. That sounds incredibly easy. I wonder if my 05 Tacoma is the same way. I'll take a look at it. Don't want to break her, as I've only had it a total of 12 hours now. Already got 61 miles on it.

I am not sure that I have the data port on my radio. It's the standard (lowest end) radio you can get. It has AM/FM/single CD. How would I select the iPod input? Push the "Disk" button a second time or something?

Good info...thanks. Actually the tape adaptor sounds really good. I got it after it was recommended at www.ipodlounge.com. As I say before though, I will end up with the ipod2car before too long.

I routed the cable to come up in the left cupholder in front of the transmission shifter. I cut a hole big enough for the cable to come up and used a cup holder mount by belkin to hold the ipod, works great.
