I have ordered a new Pioneer XM ready head unit for my '03 Tundra so I can do away with FM modulation. I have read the instructions on this site for removing the existing factory radio and I do not believe it will be difficult. My question is about general radio wiring. I realize that the new Pioneer radio will have a wiring harness, but is an adaptor needed to wire it into the truck? I have only done this once (replace a radio) and it was in a 1993 Chevy truck where you have a seperate tuner and receiver. In that instance I had to buy a wiring adaptor and an antenna plug adaptor.
As of right now, what I have ordered is a radio (Pioneer XM ready), an IP/BUS cable for taking XM from my receiver to the new head unit, and a dash kit for a 2003 Tundra. Is there anything else I would need?
Lastly, if you just cut the wires and wire like colors to each other, can you just use wire nuts or do you have to soder (spell?) them?

Assuming you plan to remove the Toyota HU & Amp (if you have a OEM external amp), if you get a harness adapter (such as those from Scosche or Metra) then the adapter will plug right into the Toyota wiring and you connect the wire leads from the adapter to the connections on your new HU. Ususally the harness adapters are standard wire color schemes to match up with the wire color scheme used by the major manufacturers.
How can you tell if you have the amp or not, unless you pull out the radio? Is there a way to determine this? I have an '03 Tundra TRD package with a basic CD/cassette/AM/FM unit.
I spoke to a radio shop and they said that some of these radios have two plugs and some have one plug. Which would I need? This is the Metra plug that was recommended: 70-1761. Their price is right around the $15 mark. I'm sure ordering online would be cheaper, but I'm not positive this is the one I need. He said if there are two plugs, then this one will not work.

I used inline butt splices for my install. They look like little tubes, and you just crimp them together. You can use splices, wire nuts, or solder. I soldered my power connection, just because the wires were different size and I didn't have a splice that fit both well. Be sure to use some heat shrink tubing or some other form of insulation if you solder...
You won't always be able to just pick like colors, but if you have the manuals you should be fine.

Try Crutchfield. They have adapters for everything. I don't care much for their equipment prices, but you can often find wire harness and mounting kits that you can't find anywhere else. And it's spelled "solder"

With or without an amp the factory harness will have 2 plugs that look like the attachment. Your harness adapter should match up. If you do not have an external amp, the factory harness plugs into the Radio/Player, if you do have a factory amp then the factory harness plugs into the amp and a 20 pin pigtail runs from the amp to the Radio/Player. The Radio/Player may also have a 20 pin plug for steering wheel controls.
