I glued my suction cups to the windshield using a product called "Seal-All", purchased at Wall Mart. It has held now for a month & cleans off with laquer thinner, if you need to. The front edge of the detector is actually below the dots.

I just had my radar hard wired in a 03 4Runner and second the vote for this mod... The spiral cable annoyed the h*ll out of me, but more than that, i don't know where your 12v adapter is on the Taco, but on the 4Runner, it is along side the shifter under a retractable cover (has a little storage box under cover too)... for some reason, it just irked me having to leave that cover open... I dunno why... maybe I'm just weird like that..

Why does everyone want a dran filter??? The 01-04 didn't have them and see how great they were. I don't even thing any tacomas had them. Just more stuff to get clogged

besides the fact that after time the condensor will clog up, eventually leading to a small puncture, and loss of refrigerant. so basically a/c will not be cold. replacing a condensor usually entails removing the entire dash and is not the funnest of jobs. a filter would greatly reduce the chances of that happening

Default Evaporator

The evaporator is behind the dash. The condensor is in front of the radiator. Thousands of vehicles have gone thousands of miles w/o a HVAC filter, but I would install one in my vehicle if someone could find a drop-in filter.

thanks for the correction. yes, its the evaporator that will clog.

it happened to my ford explorer less than 3 years after i had bought it. luckily all i did was put the refrigerant with leak-stop and traded it in like that.

Default Taking apart console

Can you explain how you took apart the console? I installed the ipod2car unit and want to run the wire under the cup holder (would have to drill hole). Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

just finished hardwiring my valentine one radar detector in my 05 double cab tacoma and thought id share some pics. i would have done a nice write up for all of you, but i remembered my camera once i had already done most of the install.

as you can prolly tell by the pics i ripped my interior up pretty thoroughly, but i wanted the install to be nice. i ran the power wire under the headboard to the passenger side 'A' pillar, there the cable goes down into the dash, behind the glove box and finally draws power from the accesory electrical socket in the center console. there was a ground screw right next to it which is the one i used. pretty clean install imho, took me about an hour, but im a little slow and at times careless, as you can tell by my "battle scars"

anyways, i had fun taking apart my taco and the detector works great, since the socket is only on with the truck you dont have to worry about turning the detector off or anything like that.

i hate the spiral cord hanging and have hardwired this same detector in 3 different cars (02 acura rsx, 02 explorer and the 05 taco)

if anyone else has a detector i highly reccomend hardwiring.

I know this is an old message, but I gotta ask, why tear apart the dash to hard wire the detector when there is power in the overhead console only inches away? I hardwired mine in less than 15 minutes using the power from the overhead console. I used the install docs for the auto-dimming mirror as an example.

Default Tear apart the dash?

1. I wanted to hardwire to the fuse box.
2. I only had to remove the A-pillar cover & the lower panel(below the steering wheel.
3. I was also installing an auto-dimming mirror, with Homelink & it required constant power and switched power.
4. I think a lot of people do it, just to see what's there!

I wired mine up to the overhead console. Used the light green wire for power and the black and white wire for ground. They are located near the compass temp unit with about 4 or 5 other wires. To remove console take out one screw in the sunglass holder compartment and pull down on the front (near windshield) of the console. Very easy.

I heard on here some time ago that the 4Runner filter will fit with minor trimming, some people on here have done it. Looks like an easy mod, here's some pics to help out, this was done using a standard filter from Lowe's

here is the upper console and i wanted to show the clips that you will pull down on in the front part of the console , i used a metal strip screwed to the suction cup windshield holder that way i wouldn't have to glue anything to the windshield and i used the screw for my ground and the green wire for my hot wire when vehicle is on everything went well...
