Audio & StereoTechnical discussions about factory or aftermarket audio and video systems.
This is a discussion thread titled "How do I change the antenna?", within the Audio & Stereo forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
what is the difference between a power antenna and a regular one? I've never heard of it before.
Really? A power antenna raises when you turn the radio on. Otherwise, it's retracted into your fender wall. A regular antenna is always raised.

Power antenna goes up and down depending on whether the radio is turned ON or OFF. A regular antenna is always extended no matter what the state of the radio.
Ah, so it's kinda like power brakes then. Power brakes go up and down when my radio is on or off. but regular brakes are always on, therefore preventing you from driving the vehicle. Right?
hee hee, just kidding

No, it's like the old Ford Escorts where the power brakes only assist when the cabin air temperature sensor is installed......found that out the hard way....

One specific question to ask or to ask to be shown is how the mast goes through the hole in the fender. The Tundra fender is at a steep angle and this is the area that requires some modification to get the 4Runner antenna to fit.
I'm also curious if the metra includes a built-in relay or is that extra?

Yeah, it does say that it needs about 11" of clearance. They are pretty good there. They can look it up on their computer and tall ya if it'll fit, I'm sure.

Is the lead that attaches to the antenna screwed on or attached some other way? C. C. Radio has some coiled antennas that would make changing easy if the lead screws on.

remove the face plate for the radio head unit( pull the temp knobs and there is screw under them)
Pull head unit out of the mounting tray to acess antenna lead .
Tie a pul wire/string to the antenna lead (fishing line works good)
follow the lead towards the right side fender you will find you need to open glove box and remove the lead from a retainer clip on top of the glove box (this was installed by a person with micro hands)
pull the lower right foot well kick panel.
turn the steering wheel full left lock.
remove the inner right fender well cover( this is where you will need the extra plastic snap plugs).
now you can pull the lead out to the fender, now remove the collar nut on the antenna base.( use painters tape around the antenna base out to about 2 inches to protect the paint.
now pull the antenna straight up out of the fender complete with the lead.
cut the pull string tie on to new antenna lead and rev. install.
on the install you will have to feed it thuough the inner fender well ,to kick panel and over the glove box one step at a time and do not force it there a lot of sharp structure angles in there and can ruin your day.
It is a tight fit going over the glove box but after that is done you have mastered the hard part.
Tightening the antenna collar to the base is touchy you will need a small wrench #6 or #7 metric and something to hold and turn the collar, I used a snap ring plier with 90 degree tip. You can't use much force or you will break the collar. And yes it will get loose again over time even with Loctite applied to it.
Have fun ( now I rate this in the #3 beer range of difficultly, dealing with inner fenderwell and working the cable in and out is the hardest part).
Hope this helps.

I wonder how those universal antennas look installed on our trucks? Or if they'd install it "properly" like the way you DIY-ers described above? I'd be worried they'd mess things up. Anyone actually get this mod done at a shop? And, if so, how'd it turn out? I'd like to upgrade to a power antenna but am unsure as to my ability to tackle this project as a DIY. I want the end result to look like it's OEM.

Another question is, does the factory radio have a connection for a power antenna? Or would I have to install a separate switch?
All a man really needs for happiness in this world is a good woman, a faithful dog, and a big-a$$ed set of tires on his truck.

I just installed the Metra 44PW22 antenna in my RX7 this past weekend (hmmm . . . might have to think about it for my Tundra). Anyway, to answer your question, yes the antenna does have a relay. If you looked at that Circuit City link posed above, the relay is that plastic box clipped to the side if the mast housing. The antenna requires both switched and unswitched power. It does require, also, 11 1/2" of clearance. If you think about getting one, Try amazon.com. Mine was $54.29 with shipping . . . not the $99 circuit City wants.
Follow the instruction by removing the wheel trim moulding. I almost had another heart attack, 5 out 6 mount clips are rusted and fall apart.
My repair shop do not have the right 3rd party antenna so I end up with a window mounted type.
I can not belive the amount of rust has been developed behind the wheel housing. Anyone had the similar experience???
Hello, I am desperate for advice on how exactly I would go about removing and replacing the antenna on my husbands 2000 tundra. I would really appreciate any suggestions
thanks Kat GlfWtrGrl
Hello you should b able to (unscrew the anntena) or theres a nut at the bootom of the antenna. The nut should b a 10mm wrench or a little bigger.
