Default Backup Camera while towing?

Okay, so for all of you electrical gurus....any idea how I could add a switch to turn on my Eclipse backup camera to check a load while towing? The camera will come on automatically when the vehicle is in reverse of course, but how can I switch it on while driving? Thanks in advance for any input.

did you wire it in yourself, if so...put a switch on the reverse line that activates either a power or ground (depending on the requirement)

Somehow the system knows when you shift into reverse...my guess would be a line that ties into your reverse light signal. You can duplicate the signal that this line puts out by adding 12v to it.

I didn't even think about it being linked to the reverse lights, that makes sense. I've attached a photo of the connector. I assume that the thick black wire is the video feed and that red and yellow are both hot (yellow being switched by ignition)?

So you think that if I bring in another hot lead (when running) and jumper it to the same wire that it would display (when the switch is on of course)? I guess I just need to figure out which wire is switched by the reverse lights....

If it is indeed wired into your reverse lights you might need to use a diode to wire a switch to the camera lead. Otherwise your reverse lights might come on when you flip the switch. However that might be a plus to have extra light from the reverse lights when towing at night.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind having the reverse lights come on as well. I'm not going to leave the camera on for any length of time, it would just be so that I could check the load periodically. Plus, I wouldn't want to blind anyone behind me.

So, do you think the easiest way is to start at the reverse light and figure out which wire is the switched hot? Then trace that back to the console and add a switched jumper wire?

Okay, so I've been reading threads about adding a switch to control the reverse lights. Do you think that this would work for the camera as well? Do I need to install a relay?

Try this. I got this at siennaclub.org so I can't take credit for this mod. That's where I got all the info to install the backup camera on my tundra. I have an override switch on my aftermarket camera so I can see the trailer from time to time. It's a nice mod to have.

Did you install one toggle switch to accomplish this? Also, do your reverse lights also come on, or just the camera?

Did you tap into the back of the nav the same way? ACC Nav pin#11, Nav Rev, and Vehicle Rev?

Thanks.

I have a single pole double throw switch installed. One position the camera operates normally coming on when I shift into reverse. Middle psoition is off completely and the camera does not operate. Mostly I wanted this for when I go to the dealership for service I can turn it off and they don't know I did any modification. The third position is for turning the camera on anytime I want. For power, I tapped into the back of the cigeratte lighter. I have 2 of them and I never use the bottom one for anything. The only time its drawing power is when I manually turn the camera on. Otherwise, i followed the diagram that I posted for the aftermarket camera. In your case, using the eclipse camera, you would cut the reverse signal coming to the nav and hook one side to the switch, and the other side of the switch you would wire to a 12+v source that was hot when the vehicle was on. Cigarette lighter for example. The middle hookup on the switch would then be routed back to the nav unit. Pretty easy mod to do actually. The reverse signal just sends 12v to the nav unit and the switching for the camera is actually done inside the nav unit itself.

So I just need to find a wiring diagram in order to figure out which wire is the Rev to the Nav?

On my Eclipse you just press the info button then the back up camera tab on the touch screen and it will display the camera until you do another nav function.

Yeah, I wish the factory one was set up that way. Of course, the dealership will tell you that you can't even add a camera to it.

Default Re: Backup Camera while towing?

I just added a video system (vga+rear video+2 more AV) in my dash. I need to find 12V when the shifter is in reverse. Has anyone found the reverse relay or a hot feed used for reverse? I thought about putting the feed to my cargo light switch instead, but I'd rather have it automagic. Althought come to think of it, it would be nice to fire up the camera while driving just so I could grab the license plate of the tailgating butthead behind me, run their plates on the carputer and call them by name when I flip them the bird...

Naw, I'd be safer sticking to the reverse lights only!

Secondly, anyone know if you can buy a complete and accurate electrical diagram with color codes and all for a 2004 DC ?
