What i am trying to do is install a Eclipse Cd5435. I have found out that I have the Jbl amp located behind the rear seats. Eventually i plan on adding a full ED sound system. In the mean time i just want to use the Jbl amp, as I dont want to do a full re-wire. I came across this http://www.autotoys.com/x/cust/produ...productid=1133 Would this be the correct harness to use?
I'm trying to do the exact same thing (new headunit, no rewire and keep the factory amp in place) in my 2006 DC. For reference, I consider this as a bigger frustration than owning a Dakota with a 296 in it (AKA: The Smokenator). I would've completely given up trying to replace it, except the stock HU sucks. Or..at least mine does. Specifically, it doesn't play burned CDs worth a crap. I don't know if I have a lemon or not, but it crackles, skips, and has constant static at higher tracks (above track 12, typically).
Here is what I've come up with, based on vague suggestions here, for which I am very greatful : )

[SHIPPING] Custom harness for LEXUS vehicle to install an aftermarket head unit (with rca plugs) to factory sound system. Factory amplifier integration harness. 12 inches.
Also fits newer Toyotas *match to picture* like 2004+ Camry with JBL, etc. (Email us for years and models not listed, Part by Metra 8113)
I have emailed autotoys' support. There responses were...terse. They said that I would need both of those parts. I asked if "to the best of your knowledge, is that all I need?" to which they basically said they don't know anything about the vehicle anyway, so they can't help.
I know some people on here have done this, but I can't get a concise picture of if it will actually work.
1) Has anybody replaced the '06 8-speaker JBL headunit without rewiring or replacing the amp?
2) Will these 2 parts above accomplish it OR what have you used?
3) I'm willing to replace the amp, but not rewire (frankly, I don't care *that much* to rip everything out and run new wires.) Is there a harnass kit that will let me use the existing wiring and just replace the HU and amp alltogether?
4) Am I the only one who is unusually angry about the design decisions behind the JBL system? : )
Thanks so much for any replies. I haven't been here long but I've already got some great ideas and learned a lot..just not enough about my audio yet. And if i'm completely off on all these, please let me know ; )
Yes we are in the same boat, however there just seems to be no difinitive answer to this problem. It really shouldnt be this difficult to replace the head-unit.
I went through this last year. I have an 05 DC that had the JBL system and I wanted to replace the head unit and keep the amp. I could NOT find any adapter harness that would do this because the OEM head unit and amp use an IP buss digital interface that is not compatible with aftermarket HUs. Do yourself a favor and forget about the weak JBL amp, it isn't worth this hassle of even trying even if there are adapters available now. Most aftermarket HU have more power than it does anyway.
The work around is to run one new cable (at least 10 conductor in case you add an amp) from the new HU back to where the factory amp is and tie directly to the speakers bypassing the amp.(There are complete wiring diagrams for your trucks posted on this site to wire into the right speaker wires back by the amp.) If you are going to keep the factory speakers, then you need to mod the fronts slightly to keep full bass signal from going to the mids. The tweeters have a capacitor crossover already so you don't need to worry about them. I posted the midrange mod here http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...ermarket-head/ .
A few months after I did this mod, I decided to replace all of the factory speakers and it was well worth it. It made a huge difference getting rid of the factory paper cone "premium" speakers. Don't get me wrong, the mid mod works as described, but good aftermarket speakers are WAY better than the factory JBLs. I have Polk Audio front and back and they are awesome, but I am sure there are many other good speakers available.
Guys, I ended up replacing EVERY piece of the factory system eventually trying to find the right sound for my DC. Do yourselves a favor and don't even mess around with the factory stuff. Pull it out and start over. I know this is a bitter pill, but I ORDERED my DC with the JBL thinking it would be pretty good and I paid a premium for a not-so-premium stereo.
Bite the bullet and pull it all out and start over. If you don't want to or can't, then do yourself a favor and add a good HU then simply bypass the factory amp and do the speaker mod. The other thing you will need is a decent sub setup, but that's another story!

I appreciate your post, but unfortunately the payment for the truck itself has taken any funds I would have put into the sound system. To do a full replacement we're talking $700 - $1,200; likely on the high-end to make it worthwhile. And, of course, my time. I've already spent $40 and probably 20-30 hours doing research on this project. I'm just not enough of an audiophile (or audiosnob like my friends) to justify spending that kind of money. Especially since the entire reason I'm doing this is to be able to play MP3 disks, which may negate the benifits of better speakers anyway.
Plus, my job isn't good enough to sustain that kinda hit right now : )
Pretty much my hard limit is $200-230 for the HU and a cheap enough amp to "work". I can get a 2nd hand amp from one my audiosnob friends for $50, but it doesn't get me any further with my goal of a Wirerunless Install
Then I think your best option is to purchase the head unit and some speaker wire (<$10). Cut the existing stereo harness or tap into it to for VCC, ACC, and GROUND. Run 4 runs of +/- wire from the headunit to the amp location. Wire the speaker wire into your new head unit. Unplug the amp and tie the speaker wire into the amp's wiring harness to feed the speakers. Perform the midrange modification that phil details above or just cut the juice to the midrange altogether, you have to remove the front door panel's to do either option.
I'm also in the same boat. I don't want to rewire the entire truck and add $xxxx of dollars in extra stuff... All I want is to add the factory sub & Eclipse 5435 and be done with it.
No rewiring mids, no yanking amps, etc...
Besides that, there is NO room to mount any amps in the DC.
Since my last posting I have spent even more hours trying to figure it out. It looks like the following is true:
*) There aren't enough Tundra's sold for audio integraters to care. Case in point, the JBL system is essentially unchanged since the 04. Crutchfield still does not have a way to do it 'easily' (3 model years later) and some of their installers flat out refuse to work on it.
*) Anybody who might have a clue how to do it on the cheap is unwilling to help, possibly out of some superiority or sour-grapes complex. "I did it the hard way, it cost me $1,800. You should have to as well." I haven't run into that here very much, but out on the Wild Internet it's there.
*) People selling digital integration kits are totally unaware of how they actually work.
How does this help us?
It doesn't. But I've given up. I now refuse to rewire not because of my unwillingness to do it, but out of principle. I can understand if Toyota sold a better model that you could install later. But they don't. I would buy the darn thing if they sold it.
