Question Tundra Steering Wheel Controls for aftermarket head unit?

Has anyone got any information on using the pre-existing steering wheel controls on an after-market head unit.
Kenwood makes a new Unit that I really want with a 10GB Hard-drive MP-3 player(additional $500)...but over 3000 tracks! Only drawback is that I would like to be able to use those controls. Removing them is a less attractive option.
I imagine any head unit could be hacked by someone with enough solder skill.

You could just leave the buttons on the wheel and have them be useless with the new head unit. There is a company that makes some sort of adapter that will connect those buttons to the aftermarket head units. The info about the company is around on this board somewhere.

I don't think it was a bad question at all, I just wish the 2002 had the steering wheel controls for the OEM radio..

these guys might have an answer...

Default I e-mailed the Guys at Peripheral...

Here are their responses. The first is from Tech Support. I asked why they didn't offer many options for Kenwood

"I guess we do not offer as much for Kenwood because Alpine and Pioneer control the market share for changers. Although Kenwood makes a nice changer we have to make what the market tells us. As for the steering wheel interface we do make it for the 03 Tundra it’s the PESWIX"

The second was similar from sales support. It mentioned that there were applications for Alpine and Pioneer. At least there are a couple of options out there and maybe that means that there are others. I didn't quote this one because I realized it is in the inbox on my office pc

I made a stop at Circuit City and talked to the installation department manager. He told me that there are generic adapters which can be installed easily as long as the replacement head unit has a remote control capability. All that you need is to install a transmitter where the receiver can "see" it. The transmitter (a small, barely noticeable eye) may mount easily in the console. Then it connects to the steering wheel controls relatively easily.

This is good news because it would bug me a great deal to have useless controls at my fingertips.
