Audio & StereoTechnical discussions about factory or aftermarket audio and video systems.
This is a discussion thread titled "Hover's Stereo 2.0", within the Audio & Stereo forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
The time has finally come for me to finish my stereo project. I currently only have the JVC KD-sh99 mp3 deck and a 10" powered bazooka subwoofer behind the drivers seat. I will be installing Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1 components for the front and nothing in the rear for now (and no, I didn't pay Crutchfield's ridiculously high prices). I might add some midbasses to the back later since the rear isn't that important in a truck. To power the front component set will be a Phoenix Gold Tantrum 400.4 which will send 50watts RMS to each tweeter and each woofer so in total each pair will be getting 100watts RMS. I believe this is called bi-amping. My installer believes in using active crossovers instead of the supplied passive crossovers (anybody have any thoughts on this?).
I will be keeping my JVC KD-sh99 mp3 deck which is awesome in of itself. Being able to have ~120 songs per cd is very nice! The red and blue leds on it are nice too.
As for the low end, I will be pulling out my bazooka and putting in a lesser known brand of subwoofer which is gaining respect more and more these days. It's the Adire Audio Brahma 15" subwoofer. It currently has the highest one-way linear xmax of any subwoofer out now (xmax is the amount the cone moves in and out). It's built as an SQ (Sound Quality) sub but is also great in SPL (friggen loud). Be sure to check out the videos at the bottom of the Brahma page or here are the individual links to the videos:
Excursion of a 12" Brahma: [Link] (4.7MB)
Excursion of a 10" Brahma: [Link] (170K)
Crazy video of 9 Brahmas actually breaking this guys door frame: [Link] (549K)
Anyways, I will be getting a 15" and will have a custom box made to sit in the center of the back seat with the woofer facing forward. It will have enough room for two passengers to sit in the back as opposed to my current setup where two people can fit, but one of them has to sit in the middle because of the bazooka behind the drivers seat which makes it very cramped. I am choosing the 15" not because I want it to be really loud or annoying to other people, but I am a fan of really deep bass and like to feel my music and the only way to do that is with bigger cones. Plus, it looks nicer . I have a Rockford Fosgate 800a2 amplifier which will be sending the sub 400watts on each of it's coils (it's a dual voice coil subwoofer) at 2 ohms. This will be putting 800watts into the sub although it is rated at 1600W RMS, 4800W peak.
I can't wait to get this stuff installed! Unfortunately my precious subwoofer is on back order all because of that silly dockworkers strike. I just received word today that the shipping company found the stuff and is currently being sent to Adire so supposedly the subs will be built and shipped out by December 6th.
Just thought I'd share my enthusiasm with you guys and maybe get some comments or suggestions before I get the actual install done.
P.S. Here is a little schematic of what the system will be (I was a little bored one night). [Link]
If it were me, I'd have gotten different components.... BUT, otherwise great choice. You couldn't have gone a better direction than with the Brahma. A few of my friend's have them (I would but don't want to lose all that space), and I couldn't give Adire more props. The Brahma is such a cool piece of machinery. Its set soooo many records. You're bass will be flat incredible. .... I'm getting excited for you.... I love it when people actually know about Adire's goodness, especially the Brahma.

I got the components almost a year ago from a TS member for a really great price. After finding out about Adire, I might have gotten their Koda components but those are almost twice what I paid. I am however thinking about getting some Koda midbasses to go in the rear sometime down the road. Can't wait .
I followed the Brahma link and saw that impressive beast. 27+mm of xmax! My only question is where will you put it? Will you remove the back seat, and what will the enclosure look like? Are you doing the install yourself?

Be sure to post pics along the way.
Remember, it's 27mm one way...54mm both ways And that's with a very conservative and precise way of measure true xmax witha DUMAX machine. Several subs out there that claim to have 20 or 30mm of xmax have been tested to have only 8mm or fewer. It's kinda like those $100 3000W amps you see at the fleamarket, it's all about which method you use to rate them and how conservative it is.
Maybe you missed it in my extremely long-winded post but I said was going to have a custom enclosure built so that it sits on the rear seats in the middle (It's right below the links to the videos). I wish I could do the install myself, but alas, I can't. I ahd been going to the local higher end stereo shops and was always turned off by the extremely high prices for a custom sub enclosure ($350 seems a bit much for carpet). I did find a custom install shop run by a guy who loves the business and he spent 2 hours explaining to me all the options and really educating me alot on the stuff. He quoted me a price of $125 for a nice contoured box with beveled edges and a recessed sub etc. Alot more than goes into the standard cheapy mdf box (mine will be birch or some kind of real wood that I forgot the name of). He's done several installations in cars that placed in a few World Finals so he knows what he's doing.

Interesting that he prefers birch, but it sounds like it works.
I always used 3/4 birch ply when building guitar speaker cabinets (except for my oak 4-10 to match my Carvin), but audio speaker builder normally prefer particleboard because it's uniform structure does not "color" the tone and allows for complete predictability of the output curve based upon shape and volume alone.
Guitarists LIKE it when their tone is "colored"

I'm not sure if he said birch or not, but it definitely wasn't particle board or MDF since those flex too much and reduce the output. I have no idea about the coloration but I don't think that would matter with such low freq's.
Originally posted by Smooth04 For the record, MDF is not a flexy material when it comes to building speaker cabinets. Not only is MDF not flexy but it is very non-resonant.
What shop in SA are you going to, just curious.
Actually, you are right...MDF is good stuff for sub boxes. I guess I was just confused the other day when I wrote that. I can't quite remember what material he said he was going to make the box out of since we last talked about it a month ago. I'm going to a small install shop called Performance Audio...never did like the big chain stores around here like Custom Sounds and the others. Plus, the owner has done installs on a few cars that placed in the world finals so I'm sure he can handle my truck.
Anyways, my sub should be shipped sometime this week so I can't wait..
Cool man, good luck to you. I used to work at Electronics 2000 and I know a few ppl at custom sounds, they are good people, even if they do seem like snobs some times, lol.

The reason I never liked any of the Custom Sounds or that other one (cant remember the name, but there's quite a few around town) is that they would never have anything that I could actually listen to. I was looking at the W7's and the eclipse alum/titaniums for that past year or so but NOBODY has any of these that I can actually hear. After waiting at one of the shops for 3 hours for one of the techs to come in with W7's in his truck but never showed, I kinda gave up. I did get a quote for $300+ for a box at custom sounds but that was quite expensive for a single sub.
I will be stopping by Electronics 2000 sometime soon to take a look at the Compustar alarms. I emailed the compustar website and this store is the only dealer in the area apparently.
P.S. Anybody know what a reasonable amount of money to pay someone for dynamatting or sound proofing the truck is? I'm wondernig if I should get this done and how much it would set me back. I'm not too technically skilled so I can't really do this myself.
Hover, ebay is a great place to get dynamat. I prefer brown bread. If you want any help matting your interior I would love to help you. I will be in SA over the Christmas holidays, (i.e. 2 weeks) and if you can wait that long i would love to help.
P.S. Custom Sounds finished thier new showroom at the San Pedro locationa and they have 2 w7's for display and listening.
Do search on here for sound damping of sound material. You'll find the McMasterCarr part numbers for there sound damping materials. Same stuff as Dyna-rippoff but 1/3 the price. I've gone bit overboard on my sound damping efforts. But my truck is super quiet on the highway and zero bass generated by my 12" JBL competition sub leaves my truck. The best way to create SQ is created nice quiet enviroment to listen in.

Thanks for the offer! I'm going to see how much my installer will charge me to do this at the same time as the rest of the system. If it's reasonable I might just get him to do it but if not, you might regret offering your help.
I found these two sites and was wondering if this is the amount of stuff that is usually dampened or are these just extreme cases:
