This is a discussion thread titled "1995 Avalon XLS ABS Brake Job", within the Avalon forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
I found that when depressing the brakes on my fathers Avalon at higher speeds cause the pedal to shimmy. My assessment is that the rotors are glazed, warped and in definite need of a brake job. I've done brakes on several cars and understand the old school ways of doing brakes. I've never worked with cars that have had ABS brakes though. I've done some reading and found that with some cars it requires a special reader or computer that when bleeding allows you to open the abs port to allow the fluid to be bled through to the wheel cylinder you are bleeding, or something to that effect. Outside of that I was told the only other thing to watch for is not to backup fluid back into the ABS unit as that can cause contaminants to flow back into the unit, which can cause damage. My question is... does anyone know if I will require this special computer or scanner on a 1995 Avalon XLS? Is there anything ABS related I should know when attempting to service the brakes on this car? Thanks for any help you can provide.
Awsome!
Thanks "Csaxon" for your reassurance.
I now feel much better knowing I will not need a special scanner and have to go through all that extra work.
I will take the rotors in and have them mic'd , if they are shot I will probably upgrade to the slotted rotors if they are not to much more and some ceramic brake pads.
