I definately wouldn't take it to someone who doesn't want to do it in the first place. They will certainly not care about the quality of work performed. I recently had my 05 reflashed, and it took nearly a month for the parts to come in, but they were happy to do it.

Just had it in yesterday. They called and said that they had to order the parts and that the o2 sensors are on "national back order". Didn't confirm whether or not they found anything on their "road test". I'll take a wait and see attitude.

I just bought my 07 touring Avalon last week and picked it up this morning. I stumbled onto this forum last wednesday unaware of the trans problems. I asked the sales mgr. if he was aware of this and he said no. I gave him the tsb# and he brought it to the service mgr. who knew all about it. The dealer was very accomodating and reflashed the car before I picked it up this morning. So I just wanted to say thank you to everybody for saving me the time, money, and possible headaches!

Just had my 05 in on Tuesday for the reflash and other work. On the drive home, it felt like the tranny was going to fall out it was shifting so roughly. Every shift was slamming the gears and actually lurching the car forward. I had never felt anything like this before.

Had it back in and, according to the dealer, they downloaded the info direct to toyota tech support for an answer. They were contacted as I was leaving and told to drive the veh for at least 50 miles and let the comp learn the driving patterns. I dont think that will help. They are going to do the test driving while I keep driving the crappy 07 Camry.

Am now waiting the outcome. If they come back and say that I need work that will not be covered, I WILL FLIP THE #@%$ OUT!!!!

You unfortunately have an '05 model which requires a great deal more work to fix than the '06. I am talking about the shifting/accel issue

There is not doubt in my mind that they screwed something up. No way the car has to run like hell for 50 miles to relearn your driving pattern. I may get a little better after getting reoriented, but what you describe is simply bad work by the dealerships service dept.

You need to contact the dealerships GM(not that that will help) and get hold of Toyota Corp.

Update: After having the manifold and O2 sensor replaced, in addition to the reflash programming, the ridiculous shifting issues were resolved by the next day.

Having left the vehicle in the "capable hands" of the service dept. I picked it back up the next day, and the shifting issue had "recorrected" itself!

I haven't noticed the lagging accel that I once did. Mileage seems to have slipped a little, 1.0-1.5 mpg.

These vehicls do have to relearn the habits of the driver after the transmission ECM has been flashed. Unfortunatly the dealer should have driven your vehicle to get this process started, so you wouldn't of had experience this condition.

Mike Murrell have you worked at dealership before? You sound as if you may have some first hand experience. All dealers are not like how you describe most of them.

I will also say on the 05 Avalon, it is a pain in the butt to put all that stuff on there. As far as running from the work, if I found one of my service advisors pushing work to another dealer I would ask him if he would like to go work for that said dealer. There are way to many other repair facilitys out there to be sending any customer elsewhere to do there bussiness, and giving another company a chance to impress one of my customers.

I had the ECM in my 07 Touring re-flashed last week and notice no difference. Oh, except now the washer fluid reservoir drains straight to ground.

okay so I picked up an o5 avalon and I have been reading about this issue with the tranny. Can you tell me what exactly is wrong with it. Do most dealers know of the issue? What is involved in fixing an 05 tranny and should I have it done?
I have noticed some jerky driving every so often.

It's an issue with the ECM (electronic control module) for the transmission. The fix involves reprogramming the ECM with new software. It's an all-electronic repair - no mechanical work is done (although I think I've read here that the 05 gets some new sensors and such). Search this thread for the TSB, it's probably attached to a post at the beginning, print the document and take it to a dealer. It falls under emission control warranty, so there should be not cost to you. Make sure you get the 05 version of the TSB.

Already posted this on Toyota Nation. Took my 06 Avalon XLS in this morning for the reflash. Took about 45 min. I could tell a difference immediately. Only time will tell if mileage improves. I'm sure my wife will be pleased.

Hi guys. New member, been reading about this problem. Thanks for all the work you are doing on this. Got a new wrinkle for you -- you're not going to believe it! Took my new 07 Avalon in for 5k service and asked for TSB EG029-07 upgrade. No questions, yes sir, it will be done. After the work, noticed car didn't drive any different. Checked the paperwork from dealer. The following is a quote:
wants TSB EG029-07 performed
Recalibration Performed TSB EG036-07 ECM ...
End quote. TSB 036 is for a Camry 4-cyl engine! If they actually did the recalibration, I'm surprised the 6-cyl Avalon runs at all.
Any comments?
Thanks again for your work and great info.

The computer that is used to flash your vehicle is very user friendly. There is no way that they can perform the flash for a Camry on your Avalon and it still move. I am sure to tech entered the wrong info into the story part of there repair order.

When this TSB is performed it is you have to select a calibration # from a list and it wont let you put the wrong # in it.

Hope this helps you.
