95 Avalon XLS Shift Lock Problem!

During the past week the shift lever has starting locking-up to the point that intermittently I have to "pop" the shift lock release button out to get the car to go into gear. And, yes, the brake pedal is depressed! I was able to locate some information on shift lock system, but I can't make heads-or-tales of the instructions...any simple step-by-step instructions would greatly be appreciated!! I am just so worried that what I’m doing now will cause more problems and damage in the near future!! Thanks.

you might check the fuse that energizes the shift lock switch. I had that problem when my wife took the fuse out to substitute it for another that had blown.
