1998 Avalon AC problem

This is my first post on this forum.
I have a 1998 Avalon XLS that has an AC problem. I have the automatic temperature control system. The AC system shuts itself down intermittently. It stays off for anywhere from a few minutes to a few days. Then it comes back on and works fine. This happens during the winter with the heater also. Everything shuts off (all lights). Nothing works including the outside temperature indicator.
Today, it started a new phase. It now cycles on, sets the fan speed, and when the temperature equals the set temperature, shuts off all power, and then cycles back on, sets the fan speed, ...
It does this continuously. Does anyone know if this is a typical problem for Toyota automatic temperature controls or if I'm just lucky. Also, are there schematics for the internals of the temperature control unit so I can troubleshoot it?
