Default 2001 Avalon Subwoofer ?

Anyone know the specs on the factory 8" Factory sub? My wife's sub is blown and I want to get a new one for her but I want to make sure I pick the right one (Ohms and such).

I don't want to know what the cost of a new OEM one would be...Yikes.

Thanks,
M

My wife's car had this problem about a year ago and no you don't want to know what a new one would cost! Your going to have a tough time finding an alternate speaker. Fortunately the speaker is fairly simple to repair...that's right, you're going to be a hero by repairing this speaker.

As speakers age the foam supporting the cone deteriorates and needs to be replaced. It's a simple matter of removing the old foam, cleaning a bit of residue and gluing a new foam ring in place. Visit Speaker Works Northwest - Speakers Repairs Woofers Parts to see a video of the process.

Removing the speaker from the car is the hardest part of the job. The speaker cover pops off the rear deck. Measure the speaker, get confused about which kit to order, email them the dimensions, order their recommended kit for around $20-25 bucks, repair, install, enjoy.

I have a spare 8 inch speaker, free air type, that will work in the avalon. I just put one in my 2000 and it worked perfectly. It is a Kicker speaker, one of a set of two, SSMB8. Check them out at Crutchfield. The replacement takes maybe 15 minutes to change out. If you are interested, I will put it on ebay as a Buy It Now for approximately 50 bucks, or about half what I paid for the set of two speakers on ebay. The replacement is easy and I will send instructions along with the speaker. Let me know. It is much better than paying $250 to Toyota or Crutchfield just for the speaker without installation. Let me know. Email address is l51roberts@charter.net or post your reply.

I sent my subwoofer to florida (Official Speaker Repair Page - Simply Speakers - Parts and Speaker Repair) and got it back a week later and sounds like new. Paid $50 to get it repaired. I pulled it out and sent it to them.

You should be able to get a 10" sub in there with a little bit of work, All youshould need realy is a wing adappter that can be made out of MDF.

SimplySpeakers.com repairs the Avalon woofers like new for $40 each if you remove/ship the subwoofer to them. They also repair other JBL speakers used in other Toyota models. Call them at 1-800-511-3343. Toyota gets around $300 for a new woofer, and since they are a special impedance and an odd size, there is not a decent aftermarket option to replace them.

I had a blown/sun-damaged woofer in the JBL system in my 2001 Avalon, and found a place here in St. Louis that repaired the speaker for $100 (it would have cost $50 had I taken the old speaker out and put the repaired one back in myself). About a month later, the repaired speaker sounds perfect. I highly recommed them:
