07 Avalon - headlights "on" warning chime?

I'm enjoying my new Avalon, but continue to find unusual characteristics.

Today, I turned on the headlights in a parking garage, then got out of the car later in broad daylight and walked away, leaving the headlights fully on.

Fortunately it was a quick stop, and I noticed as soon as I got back what I had done. Had I left it for hours, I may have been stranded with a dead battery.

Am I correct that there is no headlights-on warning chime when you remove the ignition key and open a door? Perhaps I've been spoiled by this with previous cars, but this will bite me one day.

Double check your manual. If you have the light switch turned to the proper position, they should turn off about 30 seconds after you exit the vehicle.

If it is like my Toyotas, be careful that you are exiting out of the Drivers Side door. I have had times where I opened the passenger side door, turned on the key for some reason, and then turned it off and closed the door. The lights shut off when you open the drivers side door, so if you are doing something on passenger side the lights will stay on. That burnt me once!!

If I lock mine twice with the keyfob after getting out, the headlights will immediately go out (versus waiting on the 30sec timer). My 2003 was the same way. I just habitually lock it twice now

Set the light control switch in the auto mode and they will shut off approximately 30 seconds after you open and close the driver's side door. They also go from DRL to full on at dusk. Just set the switch and forget it.
