Default New Guy

Howdy Folks,
I have an '06 Avalon XLS. Love the Avalon for the most part, but the handling is somewhat south of my Chevy '96 K1500. Should have got the Touring. Still love it though.
I purchased a pair of kayaks and to my dismay, (does a real man ever say "to my dismay") I found that no company makes a roof rack for my blizzard pearl Avalon (nor any color Avalon after '04). Found a very expensive trailer to tote the kayaks (Rack and Roll) and a company to supply a tailer hitch ( Hidden Hitch). My problem is wiring the car for the trailer lights. I have a converter to wire from the car to the trailer. Do any of you folks in Avalon land have any hints, experience etc. with the wiring or towing with the Avalon.
Thanks regards and pleased to meetcha,
Hank

Hi Hank,

I also am new to the forum and I also have had 46 looks at my initial request with zero (0) response. I feel your pain. Sorry, can't help with the trailer electrical hookup.

Hankstar-
I nave not wired a trailer, but I have tapped into the rear lamps wiring for other purposes. It will be necessary to remove the trunk finishing trim pieces (rear and left side) to access the wiring harness. Wire colors are:
Tail lamps - Brown
Stop lamps - Blue
Reverse lamps - Red
Left turn signals - Yellow
Right Turn signals - Green
Ground - White with black stripe

For ideas regarding how to route your trailer harness from the trunk to the exterior, look at how Toyota routed the wires to the license plate lamps. You could drill or punch a similar access hole and line it with a rubber grommet. Another option is to enlarge the existing factory hole (that is what I did to run wires for ultrasonic obstruction sensors and a reverse camera).
If you need more detailed instructions to remove the trunk trim pieces, and where to access the wires, I can post some pics.

Garym1j-
I suspect you received no rsesponses because your question is too general (what I call an "essay question", becase a small essay would be necessary to answer it). I suggest you ask more specific questions, such as "What are the pros and cons of the Satellite Navigation option?"
