Default 08 Avalon 6-speed Trans - Like It?

I noticed that the 08 comes with a six-speed transmission.

Is there any difference in performance over the 05-07 transmissions?

Is the 6th gear an extra overdrive? I also noticed that toyota reduced the expected mpg's on the 07 and raised raised the mpg's on the 08..... I found that my 06 got at least as advertised - when they aren't adding ethanol for reducing emissions during winter driving. During summer months, I get 24 - 31 mpg's and 19 - 28 mpg's during winter driving.....

What are your experiences?

Bob

Yes ethanol is a curse in the winter months.

Does hinder MPG at 10% mix.. and it costs more to formulate if I'm correct.

The 6-speed was used in the 2007 Lexus ES350 and 2007 V6 Camrys. Owners have reported aLOT of trouble with this transmission - enough to even cause Consumer Reports to "not recommend" the 6-speed equipped Camrys.

This Lexus forum
ES350 Forum - Club Lexus Forums even has a transmission problem poll going

I've rented a couple 2007 Avalons with the 5-speed automatic and they shifted flawlessly. The main potential benefit of the 6-speed is slightly brisker around town acceleration, but the Avalon V6 is already so powerful that most owners would not likely notice the difference.

The 5th gear has a ratio of 0.71 to 1; the 6th gear has a ratio of 0.61 to 1. Therefore, the 6th gear is indeed an additional overdrive. This helps explain the excellent MPG rating on the 6-speed Avalon. In terms of horsepower, all generation 3 Avalons have identical engines although Toyota reduced the hp rating for the ’08 model (268 vs 280 on previous models). This revision is to conform to SAE revised methods of measuring torque and power values. Again, all this is only paperwork but the actual engine performances in terms of power output have not been compromised.

I have owned toyota's for 30 years, have a 1997 avalon that still runs great, past this car to my son, just bought an 08 XLS. WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! after dropping 30K, and not even putting on 900 miles I noticed that the trans is slipping. from what I have read their is no fix for this 08 6 speed. They really blew it with this one, G
