Default Strut question

I performed a quick search and didn't come up with much info, so let me start by asking some of you at what point did you change your struts?

The car in question is my wife's daily driver (1999 Avalon) with somewere in the vacinity of 80,000 miels. Last time I used her car, which had to be a couple years ago, I told her she needed to have the struts replaced. It had too much of a floating feeling to believe the struts were doing what they're supposed to do. She had her independent mechanic look at it and he said the struts are okay. I don't know if he didn't want to do the job, or had too much work. So there is little chance she'll have anything done to her car. She's about to go visit our daughter and will be gone for a few weeks, which seems like a good time to get this done. I just priced the parts and WOW this not a cheap endeavor. If you've replaced your struts or had it done by a shop, I'd like to hear your experiences. FWIW, the car has always had a knocking noise coming from the passenger side strut, since day one, when traversing rough roads.

Default Re: Strut question

hey Catmonkey,

i have a 1995 avalon xls with 239,000 miles on it. i just had all four struts & strut mounts replaced (Monroe Sensa-Trac) at PepBoys. Lifetime warranty on those babys (for whatever that's worth). It would have cost me $860 installed - including the alingment, but i ended-up paying $1,063 total because i added a cv joint/boot replacement & oil change to the ticket. Seems like the toyota dealer wanted about $1,200 or so just to do the four struts & strut mounts.

The ride & handling are 100% better and most of the suspension noise is gone. i suspect the source of my remaining noise would be the rear sway bar bushings. They are next on my list.

i wish i had done the struts & strut mounts sooner because man, what a difference!

btw & fyi... i have seen several people on these boards recommend that you not replace the struts without also replacing the strut mounts at the same time. The PepBoys guys said the same thing. Makes sense to me so that's what i did and i couldn't be happier with the results.

good luck!
