My son was trying to do me a favor and tried to upgrade the DVD in my 06AV with a copy from an 08 Prius. It did not recognize the disk. But now it will not recognize the original disk either AND it will not eject disks. I hear it spinning with the power on, but no eject. I've tried a full power unhook, but zippo.
Any suggestions? If I need a new nav unit, which aftemarket unit does anyone recommend?
Is your Stock Nav screen a Double Din size as in 99% of other Toyotas?
If not, Yu may have a unique size Nav console unique to the Avalon. Yu will have a problem finding an aftermarket one to fit.
Also, does your Nav Touch screen control serve the Audio as well as your climate controls?
Yu may run in to issues with this also. Not sure.
It may be better to just fix what yu have.
Why did yu upgrade the Map DVD in the first place. There aren't any true advantages to upgrading an O6 Map software unless Toyota specifically offers it as a Service bulletin.
It has been stated many times to never ever use the incorrect DVD Map disc for your vehicle. Many have run into similar issues as yours. Most of these Map DVD's ARE model specific. And never ever use a burned Toyota DVD copy of someone elses even if it is for the same vehicle. Also similar issues.
I suggest yu price what it would cost to repair and chalk it up as an expensive lesson.
My father-in-law just bought a new Prius and the nav system had some new roads and locations on ir from my version. My son thought he would try it in my Avalon.
I assume its the standard dbl DIN size. and yes it is used by the audio as well. That part works fine. its just the DVD nav player that doesn't work. The display tells me the that the disk is unreadible. Both the Prius disk and my old stock disk.
As suggested earlier maybe your dealer can clean the corrupted files out of your nav system and then reload your original correct version nav disc into your Avalon. I have to think that's the most economical approach to your dilemma.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
That wasn't a good idea. Usually the DVD nav discs also update the nav unit's firmware. The fact that it didn't recognize the disc just means the Prius and Avalon use different software or a completely different software version (and firmware as well). See if your owner's manual has anything about the DVD navigation and the disc lockout feature. You might have to push a series of buttons in order or something to get the unrecognized disc to eject.
Thats why less is better I think! I just pull off the road and look at a AAA map or trip tic book....But then I'm old as dirt and like peace and quiet. Those navigation systems are not all that correct I hear and what is worse they talk too much too!
Hey I'm as old as dirt and after having factory navigation in my wifes Camry it was one of the first things I added to my 2004 Tundra when I purchased it in April 2007. My opinion differs in that I finally liked someone (a female voice at that) that could accurately guide me through with voice and split screen highlighted lane locations well ahead of decision time. Beats the heck out of trying to read multiple signs who's definitions seem to vary depending on their State and City locations. Best of all I can watch out for other traffic while I wait to look at the screen until her prompt. Biggest issue for me was to think I knew better than her when lane choices came up. She eventually managed to convince me that I was the one that was directionally challenged in strange cities. I do admit that in some area's she is blind especially in smaller cities in the mountainous areas of some states.
