Default Avalon stalls but runs after redline

My mother has a 2003 Avalon with about 80,000 miles on it. She says that sometimes it starts but stumbles at idle and then cuts off. My father says that when it does it he redlines the car in park for a few seconds and it returns to normal. (I know this is not the best practice in the world)

They say that when it begins to stumble if you hold your foot on the accelerator and keep it around 1,000 rpms it it fine, but when you let off it dies again. They say the only way to "fix" the problem is by revving it to redline. No problems occur while driving the car, just on initial startup. Only hapens on occassion, not all the time. It was taken to our local mechanic and he did the normal tuneup stuff: plugs, air filter etc, but to no avail. Any ideas?
