AvalonGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Avalon.
This is a discussion thread titled "2005 Avalon Navigation System", within the Avalon forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
I am in the process of picking options for a 2005 Avalon that I am about to purchase. My dealer is unfamiliar with the navigation system in this car, but states that the system in the 2004 Avalon was difficult to use and not popular with customers. Are there any dealers or individuals who have used the system in the 2005 Avalon? Will it be easy for my wife ("I hate computers") to use? I would like some more information on this system before investing $1,900 in it.

The Avalon nav system is pretty nice on the new 05 car the last one sucked because it had a remote control in the center part of the car and was not user friendly at all and some losed the remote..The new avalon I drove today has the control's in the middle part of car and doesn't use a remote like the last one and wile it was some benifit's I like the camry dvd based nav better and I have this system on my Tundra because it's touch screen is very user friendly ..Wile the new avalon has a nice nav It's really not as user friendly like the nav system found on the camry and tundra and seq based in the center part of the car.It is me or does avalon interior seem like too much plastic on the intresment panel where the nav system is at (I really dont care for the placement where they have it) . My parent's might up upgrading there 99 avalon to the new 05 style too good luck with your new avalon post a lot of pictures on it when it get it I think my family is getting a Diamond white like there lasted avalon.

We purchased a MAGELLAN Roadmate 700 @ Sound Advice in Jacksonville, Fl.
The purchased price is $1218.72 including tax. It is user friendly, we used it during a purchased of real estate property in North Carolina. We find remote places in the rural areas of North Carolina without getting lost. It is portable you can transfer it to the next vehicle you own easily. Suction cup holder with a flexible goose neck adapter that you can install on the windshield is included. Buy this unit you will not regret it. Go to amazon.com and do some research on this unit.

My guess, is yes, you will, coming from a tomtom. It's not that the Nav system is terrible, or that it is not touch screen... for me, it is that the entry method (interface) and particularly the joystick to do it are really bad. The problem is you push down on the center of the joystick to 'select' and while moving to your selection, often it 'selects' the thing you are trying to move past to get to the item you want. It is very very frustrating.
VZ Navigator (avail on Verizon cell phones for $10/no) is superior in about every way except for the moving map and size of the display. My wife and I have been using it for well over a year before buying our '06 Avalon in August... we're not getting rid of our subscriptions!
Since I bought a used car, I'm glad it had the factory Nav in it as opposed to not, but I certainly would not buy this system for $2k extra! You could do much much better with an aftermarket headunit that includes touch screen nav with much better looking maps and easier user interface (plus built in DVD player, hard drive, etc.)

I have an 05 with nav...I used to have a Garmin 330 in my Tundra. The Garmins/TomTom/Magellens etc, will be far superior to the Toyota's. That is what they do...make GPS units. Toyota makes cars.
The 05 Nav does take some time to find your way around and get used to its functions, but like me you can grow to find it quite capable. Just remember, its not the best on the market.
I would not pay the price you talked about for the system. If its for your wife, I would buy a Garmin C330 or C340 for $300...it has the touch screen and is the easiest to use of all GPS units. Check out Circuit City for this unit and read the customer reviews before you purchase.
Good luck and let us know how it plays out for you.
Just go my car. Very initial reaction is the system works. It is capable.... But compared to the tom tom... things are much more complicated on this system. For example. the Tomtom tells you what time you are going to arrive based on the current speed and the speed you need to get there. It is very accurate. The avalon... is based on you programing the average speeds on three different type of roads. It won't take into effect traffic or anything else which is just dumb.
There are some other annoyances but I need to get more used to it.
