AvalonGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Avalon.
This is a discussion thread titled "Headlight Adjustment", within the Avalon forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
Drove my new 2006 Limited at night for the first time last night. The low beams were aimed too low in my opinion. Can these lights be adjusted? I read in the owners manual these lights were self leveling.
The self-leveling adjusts for weight in the car, which you see running through its test cycle at each start. The lights do have a sharp upper cutoff pattern, more European than American, so they will appear different to the driver than normal headlights. The light penetration will be far longer than normal lights, however. I'd recommend you let the dealer make any adjustments. Too frequently I am dazzled by oncoming HID light drivers that apparently have made adjustments, and the lows appear like high beams. Doing it correctly as a DIY'er means finding a very flat lot, a wide wall a set distance away, and making marks to determine the amount of adjustment you have made. That said, the procedure for removing the front cover and finding the adjustment screws, along with the adjustments, is in the manual. These lights can be a real hazard to oncoming drivers if they are not properly done.

I have a similar problem, except that I feel my headlights are set too high. And where in the manual does it talk about pulling the headlight covers and setting the adjustment?
the adjustment is behind the cornerlamps, I took mine to toyota after I got it lifted, when I got it back the cornerlense pops out every time I drive now...be careful!

Okay, I think I've screwed up my headlights. I have a 2006 Avalon Limited and thought the low beams were too low. The adjustment screws are easy to get to so I raised the headlights. I got them too high so when I attempted to lower them the passanger side lowered just fine, but the driver's side will NOT go down. I took it too the dealer and they said, since they were "self adjusting" they couldn't adjust them. I took it to another shop and they said they adjusted it and it should be okay. I still get flashed at night and don't take it out after dark now because of it.
Any suggestions short of replacing the whole headlamp assembly?
In attempting to adjust headlights on 2001 tundra, it appears that there is a a ball joint like item on head light assembly which (I assume) snaps into something, plastiac framework, or something, if so, it is missing. Open to suggestions. Is there a diagram/picture of assembly available?
I finally took my Avalon back to another dealer and they were able to fix them just fine. So I would definitely wait to take it to your dealer to help adjust the lightes. Or if you go to one who claims there's nothing to be done because they're "self adjusting", then move on the next and hopefully someone there will know what your talking about and can help you fix your problem.
