AvalonGeneral discussion forum for the Toyota Avalon.
This is a discussion thread titled "2000 Avalon Carpet/floor wet???", within the Avalon forum, part of the Cars & Vans Forums category.
Noticed a musty smell in the car this week. Carpet in rear soaking wet toward rear of both foot wells and parts of front carpet also wet, mostly right next to seat edge. Also wet under seats just next to a/c /heat vents. Anyone have ideas where this water/drainage maybe coming from? No, the windows/roof were not left open...one suggestion offered by mechanic!! Thanks for your help.
I agree about the plugs and think the selling dealer dealer didn't install the plugs during the pre-delivery procedure. I know they didn't on our used 03 Camry (was a Torrance,CA Toyota Corporate vehicle ) because they were still in the glove compartment when I bought it.

If a combo of all these whizz bangs met their claims you'd have to syphon gas out of your tank every second day and sell the excess horsepower on the third????
tks for your very quick response. Some history...we bought this car new and have maintained it to the 'T'. Could these under side body plugs be failing?? also can u be more specific about the AC line, is this a failure from aging and is there some part we need to replace. tks once again.
I am also experiencing the same problem with my 2000 Avalon...I bought it new as well. Everyone states it is the AC condensation line, but I had my mechanic clear it ....it was not that...but I noticed also it started again this spring when we had all that rain...which made me suspect there was an opening in the body underneath perhaps a seal or moulding gone...but body plugs sounds like the same possible reason....
I too have the same problem. It is under the passenger seat. I dried it up with a towel (two large towels were soaked) and took the care for a spin to see if more water would surface...and it did. The water was warm to the touch and it seemed to be brewing just behind the floor vents. The vents were dry and the car was not overheating, even in 100 degree temperatures. Was your problem the body plugs, AC Line, a physics defying spring of water?
I own a 2001 toyota avalon XLS. try checking to see if you have a leak next to your driver or passenger side sun visors where the visor arm is attached to the A-Pillar of your car. I had a small leak on both sides that caused water to slowly drip onto the floor on either side. I noticed the leak was coming from the color coded weather stripping channels on top of the car where it ends at the windshield. I purchased some RTV clear silicone sealant at Discount Auto Parts. I first cleaned the area with a cotton swab to soak up and water and dirt. I then applied the clear silicone beneath the rubber gasket that goes around the windshield in each corner where the color coded weather stripping channels meet the windshield on both sides of the car and applied some silicone as well underneath the color coded weather stripping channels to hold them down in place. I haven't had any more leaks since then. I hope this helps...
My wife recently drove for 4 hours in heavy rain in our 2000 Avalon. She experienced fog coming from the air conditioner vents. Now I find that the carpets are soaked, front and back. I immediately ran a wire up the AC drain line, but could detect no blockage. The drain seems to be working properly when. If it is an AC problem, I suspect water dripping from the underdash and under seat vents. But why? I don't suspect a problem with the body plugs, since this is the first time we've had this problem since buying the car in Aug 06.
I've used a carpet wet vac and a fan to get some of the moisture out, but I know I'm going to have to get the carpets up and dry them out. Anyone know just how hard a job this is? The maintenance manual I have doesn't cover this. I don't want to pay a Toyota mechanic $40+/hour to pull carpet. Any suggestions on who I might go to?
Experienced a similar problem in my 2003 when it was brand new. I had purchased it after several days of rain where the dealership was located.
They hired a company called leak and seal, they detected a leak where the windshield seats to the body of the car. Once they sealed it, the dealer replaced the pad under the carpet and the carpet.
Give that man a prize! The dealer indeed found that the sunroof drains were clogged. I didn't even know there were sunroof drains!
The dealer also said that they thought there was a good chance the carpets and pads would dry out by themselves over time. So far, no smell...but I'm ready to take it to a detailer at the first sign.
