The PDF is a big help. Is the 07 Avalon the same process as the 06? Can I use the end of my 3/8" extension for the center cap removal or is there a special tool? Thanks, Joe

Your 3/8" extension will fit perfectly.
You may find that, when attempting to remove just the cap, the entire filter housing twists off instead. If that happens, get some disposable plastic gloves and place a drain pan under the filter, as several ounces of old oil will leak out as the housing is withdrawn. Some owners elect to skip the cap removal and housing drain step entirely. I've done it both ways and don't really have a preference.

Can I use a 65 mm end cap wrench to remove the filter housing on the 07 Avalon? Thanks, Joe

Yes. A thick plastic one works a lot better than a metal one.
I use the Stride-Tool type B, currently sold at my local Wal-Mart for $3 as a Valvoline 65mm/67mm filter tool.

I cannot take credit for this - found it one evening using "google".

The credit goes to someone whose web name is "n0v8or".

When I come across items like these, I merely post them all over the place for eveyone's benefit.

You may have already found this out, but in my area we can get the Avalon filter cartridge kit at NAPA. It's less expensive at the dealer, though, and it's OEM there.

basically, the 'cartridge' is just the filter innards of a regular looking oil filter... it's just that the housing keeps getting re-used and you replace the round filter element and o-rings. I guess to reduce waste.... more to get you to have the dealer do the changes for you I think. The 'Green' approach that brings more 'Green' back to the dealer.

Here’s my two cents :

The torque value for the oil filter drain plug is 10 ft-lbf.
The torque value for the oil filter cap (oil filter housing) is 18 ft-lbf.
The torque value for the oil pan drain plug is 30 ft-lbf. This plug also has a gasket that should be replaced when changing the oil.
These values correspond to the 2GR-FE engine found in the 3rd generation Avalons, including the 2008 model.
The original oil filter wrench for the 3rd generation Avalon is what Toyota call SST 09228-06501, and it can be purchased online through SPX OTC website. SST = special service tool.

Note: some of the terminologies in the PDF file were wrongly mixed, but the article itself was fabulous.
