I didn't see this longer thread before posting to a newer one. Hope no one is irritated by my repeating information here.
My wife's car had this problem about a year ago. Fortunately the speaker is fairly simple to repair yourself.
As speakers age the foam supporting the cone deteriorates and needs to be replaced. It's a simple matter of removing the old foam, cleaning a bit of residue and gluing a new foam ring in place. Visit Speaker Works Northwest - Speakers Repairs Woofers Parts to see a video of the process.
Removing the speaker from the car is the hardest part of the job. The speaker cover pops off the rear deck. Measure the speaker, get confused about which kit to order, email them the dimensions, order their recommended kit for around $20-25 bucks, repair, install, enjoy.
Thanks for the information. I found a Kicker speaker that worked for me. Rated at input range 40-175 watts, with a higher sensitivity 89db. The installation took about 15 minutes. Did not have to remove the seat like some said. After removing the third brake light as described before, I removed the 10mm bolts and lifted the assembly out without having to remove the seat. There is enough movement in the rear deck up to one half an inch, and you can easy it out. Once out the speaker I found fit nicely in the old slot and I used the plastic ring and covering to clamp in the new speaker. Was able to use the old plugs too. I have a speaker for sale now if anyone is interested. I plan to post it on ebay for about $45 including shipping and handling. I had to buy a pair and have no use for the second speaker. It is Kicker SS8MB and it works very well. It is a free air speaker, mid range 30-500hz. Any interest?
i fixed our woofer for a buck of ge's 100% silicone 2 sealant just put a good bead around edge of surround where the foam edge has torn after removing plastic trim ring which actually holds brake light assembly .lay a bead up to the ribs, lay a good bead around edge of brake light mount ring. reassemble and enjoy let it cure for twenty four hrs then enjoy, even rob zombie could not take it down. joe
My first "fix" of this problem was to cut the wires in the trunk, right at the solder points on the speaker. Now the other speakers work fine without the rattle. My next task will be to remove the woofer and either fix it, or replace it. On another forum, everyone who replaced the JBL with a new JBL from the dealer, eventually lost it to the same problem. That back window and the sun, will cook any speaker you put back there if it gets enough sunlight on a regular basis. I would highly recommend against buying a new one from a dealer.
Did you successfully replace your Avalon subwoofer? I can not figure out how to remove the retaining screws from the bottom side of the black plastic mounting ring. Can you help me out with any info? Thanks, DH
I am in the same situation with my 2001 avalon. Any luck finding it? I've been told that I have to use only a JBL 86160-AC180. Can't you substitute anything else?
Thanks.
I have a 2000 Avalon and I had the same problem with the sub...... I put in an 8 inch I had thinking if I used a 4 ohm it would work. Well speakers are different, you do need a free air and a lower watt may help. The radio is only putting out 32 watts to the sub. I look around and found one at partsexpress.com (Parts Express:Goldwood GW-8024 8" Butyl Surround Woofer 4 Ohm) this is a link to the one I bought. If you look at the price you may think it's crap!!!!! But, you really don't need much. I do love my music and I can't tell a difference between the JBL and the Goldwood. except the price.

Thanks! I just got that speaker and installed it (2000 Avalon). It took a lot of doing to get the plastic frame out from the deck, but after that, the soldering was easy and the only minor hitch was the screws didn't match up, so I glued the bottom frame of the speaker to the plastic frame to hold it in place.
Hey I had a blown speaker too and a SOLUTION . I have a 2000 Avalon. The Surround of the subwoofer(the foam part attaching to the fame) was not attached to the frame anymore and it made weird noise when listening to music. I put adhesive glue (the glue that is white but dries clear) all around the subwoofer and let it dry off and it fix my problem.
SimplySpeakers.com repairs the Avalon woofers like new for $40 each if you remove/ship the subwoofer to them. They also fix other JBL speakers from other Toyota models. Call them at 1-800-511-3343. Toyota gets around $300 for a new Avalon woofer, and since they are a special impedance and an odd size, there is not a decent aftermarket option to replace them.
Hello everyone. I've got the same problem with the rear speaker in my 2000 Avalon with an additional problem. I CAN'T GET THE DARN THING OUT!! I removed the cover, disconnected the brake light, took out the 10mm bolts, and PRESTO....it won't come out. The hole in the rear deck panel isn't big enough for it to pass through. I've pushed, pulled, and finagled it every which a way and nada. Am I going to have to cut the hole out bigger?? If someone could elaborate a little more on the removal procedure I would really appreciate it. THANKS!!
