Default Need Speaker for 2000 Avalon JBL

The Woofer speaker (rear center) in my 2000 Avalon is blown. Any idea where I can get one without paying full price at the dealer?

I am in the same situation with my 2001 avalon. Any luck finding it? I've been told that I have to use only a JBL 86160-AC180. Can't you substitute anything else?
Thanks.

I have a 2001 Toyota Avalon XLS with the same problem. I did some research online and discovered that you need to install a (free air) subwoofer. I found one at millionbuy.com for 35.95 + 10.55 shipping. It is a Kicker 05C84 8" 200w subwoofer. I removed the old subwoofer from the plastic ring it was attached to in order to be able to use the oem white plug that is attached to it. I centered the new speaker on the plastic ring which the old sub was mounted on. I then used and electric screw driver fasten the new subwoofer to the plastic ring since it did not fit exactly like the original one. I then extended the length of the wires coming from the original harness by splicing and quickconnecting new wire to the red and black leads so that they would could be connected to the new sub. I reinstalled everything back in the car and plugged in the original plug. Turned on the radio and it sounds GREAT!!!

How did you remove the speaker from the oe plastic frame? Did you have to remove the rear deck to get to the oe speaker and plastic frame? What was the replacement speaker diameter?

In order to remove the subwoofer you have to first remove the 3rd brake light housing which is located just below the rear windshield. You simply just pull it up and forward with your hands....very easy to do...once loose you then disconnect the rear 3rd brake light cable and remove the beige plastic housing. Then you need a 10mm socket to remove the 4 retaining bolts that hold the oem plastic speaker holder in place. Make sure you disconnect the white connector that gives power to the speaker. Once removed there are 4 more phillips screws to remove a mesh screen that sits on top of the speaker and releases the speaker from the plastic holder. The outer frame diameter of the Kicker speaker is 8.5".

We had the same problem as many of you did. The rear speaker in our 2000 Avalon deteriorated. You have to remember that this speaker is part of the JBL sound system for this automobile. The JBL sub-woofer is very low wattage. Replacing it with another speaker, at 200 watts, as some of you have done is not a good idea. Why, because you would need an amplifier to properly drive a 200 watt speaker. Just because a 200 watt speaker works, does not mean it is correct. You can purchase the JBL speaker at a cost of $250.00 from your Toyota dealer, which makes him very happy. I could have purchased it from Toyota for $188.00 because I have a shop and we buy from our local dealer. This particular JBL speaker is only made for these Toyota vehicles and can not be found elsewhere. But, what I found is that these speakers can be repaired very inexpensively. There are many companies spread across the country that recone and refoam speakers, both autmotive and home speakers. Some of these businesses even sell the reconing and refoaming kits, that you can install yourself. I choose to have a company, Simply Speakers (Official Speaker Repair Page - Simply Speakers - Parts and Speaker Repair) repair mine. Total cost for the repair will be about $50.00.I sent it there, they called me upon its arrival, give me a quote, which I approved, and it should be back in a few days. I will let you know how it came out. Go to Google or whatever search you use, and look up speaker repair. Call them or e mail and see which one you are happy with.

I bought all 7 speakers from ebay. They were from an auto recycler. I paid $100.00 for all of them. I thought that was fair.

I sent ours to WWW.simplyspeakers in Florida and they repaired it for $45.00. There are several companies around the country that do this. Search Google or whatever search engine you use and you will come up with several of them.

If you already have the speaker out, let me know how to get the wired plug that is on the speaker back into the recepticle on the plastic mount. Having a heck of a time figuring it out.

Just to let you know, the JBL sub-woofer for these Toyotas is only made for them. You can not get this exact speaker anywhere else but Toyota.

Hello fellows Avalon riders.
I recently purchased an Avalon. So far so good, except that I had the same problem with the woofer described in this thread.

I learnt that from some of you that I could have this fixed, so thank you. I happen to live in Burbank, the media city. There are a lot of specialists in audio/video systems in my neighborhood.

I took out the woofer and brought it to a shop across the street. They work mostly on high-end systems for musician etc. but hey!!
One guy, Mike, looked at it and said it was fixable. The speaker was in a very good shape except for the foam. He took it to the back of the shop and within 30 min. I had woofer that worked better that new for $65.

I asked him if I can pass his info to the rest of you to make my contribution as a small pay back to the forum for the info I got from here. Here t is:

Good luck.

while the factory sub is meant for less power than most aftermarket ones, underdriving a sub never does any wrong (I drive my 1600 watt max 12 inch jbl subs with 75w apiece, just because its almost too loud with that much wattage.)

avalon's of all years require either:
a)(simpler) free air 8in sub (99% of modern subs are box-only, it increases power handling mostly, as well as volume and such, the only one i know of right now is the kicker comp 8inch as far as free airs go, if you find any older (80's to earlier 90's) it is usually free-air and low power handeling)
b) take any 8-inch sub and attatch a box for it, simpleist way is just get a box for an 8 inch sub, and wood screw through the speaker mount, rear deck, and then the box (or is it deck, speaker mount, box, i cant remember if the stock sub is mounted from the top or bottom)

and all avalon's have the cut-out for a sub if you want to add it with a separate amp, but honestly your best bet is to just take the little baffle out and put a more normal sub in the trunk with a normal box.

I had the same problem with my 2000 Avalon speaker which I actually thought was two speakers but its actually only one center speaker. Funny thing is I stopped over my friend's house who is always installing speakers in his truck--he just happened to have a spare 8 inch speaker laying around his house--don't even know the brand. But, he started to take my seats out popped it in--and I've been riding with good sound from that moment on. So, to make a long story short--you don't have to go to the dealer and pay that dealer price--I got mine installed for $20.00 bucks

as a side not, most any sub is essentially free air, boxes are mostly for tuning and power handeing, you can use almost any sub in a free air application, but the peak/rms power handling are split 5 to 10 fold.
