Default Question For 2006 Avalon Owners

I recently had alarm system issues with my 2006 Toyota Avalon and would appreciate it if I could get fellow '06 Avalon owners to do something for me when time permits.

Close all your doors, trunk lid and hood. Set the alarm on as you would when leaving your vehicle. Wait for all of the lights to go off that remain on momentarily after locking the vehicle with the hand-held remote.

Now open the trunk with the hand-held remote without first unlocking the vehicle with the hand-held remote.

Does the alarm go off?

Thanks for your time.

Nope, no alarm. I do this all the time, BTW. In fact, I did it a few hours ago when I loaded the old lady's suitcase.

No - my '06 Avalon is not equipped with the smart key feature.

The alarm does not go off for me.
But I have the smart key. So I have to do it from far so the car does not detect the key

Mike, I have 2006 with smart key. I can open the trunk with the smart key remote from a distance and the alarm does not activate. I can also just walk up to the trunk, leaving the smart key in my pocket, and just push the button on the rear of the trunk to open it. No alarm.

Even though you do not have the smart key, you should still be able to open your trunk with your fob without activating the alarm. I suspect the alarm is detecting the open trunk, but not the fact that it was opened "properly," and therefore the alarm is activating. If the service manager claims this is the way it is supposed to work, then drag him to the lot, because the others won't do that. Good luck. --sam

Thanks to all for taking the time to run this experiment for me.

When we bought our '06 Avalon with the std. key arrangement, my wife could pop the trunk with the hand held remote, alarm activated(doors locked) and NOT set off the alarm.

Out of the blue, the alarm would go off if the trunk was unlocked with the remote. She drives the car pretty much exclusively and noticed it immediately.

We took it to the dealer we bought it from and immediately got the usual "that's how it's supposed to work" from the service writer. I contacted the service mgr. and was told "he would look into it".

The real insult came when we picked up the car and were told that an alarm system component was replaced, but that it's wiring was disconnected from the truck so that we would not be bothered by this.

If that were really the case, why didn't they just disconnect the original component? Throughout the entire process, we were made to feel this was our problem.

My experience with Toyota at this and one other dealership has me leaning heavily back towards Honda when it comes time for our next car.

Toyota dealerships have really sunk when it comes to customer service and being straight up with people as they once were.
