Default Considering a 2000 Avalon with 127K - what to look for?

Hello all. I am considering a 2000 Avalon XLS at a Toyota dealer where my aunts husband works. They are asking $9800., but I think I can get it around $8500. The car is in excellent conditions and checks out clean, but it has 120K miles. What are the potential problems on the 2000 models? I know this is the first year of the redesign. Hopefully no problems. Do these models have the "sludge" woes, or is that on the Camry only?

Also- are these cars pretty well built on the inside? Any squeak or rattle issues? I think that the 95-97 models were plagued with rattles, so I am wondering about the 00'+ models.

Thanks in advance!

Well I wouldn't worry about that mileage since I bought a '01 a month ago with 375,000 miles. It belonged to my employer so I had a chance to evaluate it. the only thing was it ran alittle hot when ambient temp was in 90's, in stop n go traffic, with a/c on. I just bought a new radiator and that cured it that for $370. Had a brake caliper sticking and wearing out pads on one wheel, but that was it. I know they did maintenance regularly which obviously helps. Oil changed at 3 to 4K miles. It used about a half a qt after 3500 miles. They paid $30K for my vehicle 5 years ago with every option that was available and I bought it for $1500 miles with a new set of tires! If it only lasted a few months, I new it would be worth it. As it is, i travel for work and put 1000 to 1500 a week on it.

good to know that these can go for 375k miles.

i purchased a 97 avalon with almost 200k miles...body in great shape, interior needed cleaning up. i picked it up for the edmunds price (under $4000) because of the condition. and if i end up travelling overseas for 6 months again, i should be able to pass it on fairly easily.

mine does not have all the bells, just a few whistles...i figured fewer things to go wrong.

anyways, good luck with your puchase.

I owned a 99 Avalon XL and now own a 2000 XLS. It runs great with no rattles. They can develop a problem with the MAF sensor if you don't change oil at regular intervals. Toyota does a free repair on the MAF for 8 years (even though the user abused it by not changing the oil).

Love the car, the ride and the service.
