Default 1996 Avalon A/M Radio

Can Someone lend me a hand in installing an aftermarket radio my 96 Avalon XL? I need to know if I can can bypass the amp using the Metra wiring harness. If so, where is the amp and the plugs?
Also, what is the easiest way to replace the front speakers?
Anyone else have similiar issues?

Default Re: 1996 Avalon A/M Radio

I installed a full system in my car. The metra harness wasn't in stock for my car, so i just winged it. the amp is behind your glove box, to got to it:
(i take no responsibility for what you fudge up, break, bend, or destroy, if you screw up anywhere, you may disable the vehicle, i know i messed up my blinkers for a while, dash lights, etc, alot of stuf fin there is easily messed up. this is not a tutorial, it is a half assed attempt at a guide for someone that knows what they are doing, but needs some reference, dont try this unless you know electronics, cars, and stereos in the first place.)
1)remove passenger kick panel, 1 plastic nut in front, unscrew, pull panel towards you, unclicks
2) remove the under dash black piece, should be a 10mm nut or two, look around, should more or less fall out.
3)remove under glove box trim, i think tis a pop off (i did this months ago, sorry, its not too hard though)
4) glove box is a pain, with door closed, unbolt it, 3 or 4 10mm, and wiggle it off of the rest of the box.
5) with door off, pop off panel on inside left (slim knife or screwdriver, pry it up) and unplug wires, basically just find the little catch, push it in, pull wire clip out)
6) on right side, remove the conspicous little black square and the bolt it covers
7)dont remember if there were philips head black screws on the top of the glovebox, if there are, pop em out
8) glovebox should kinda just be hanging there now and wiggle, so wiggle it out carefully, shouldn't have to force anything.
9)see that silvery rectangle with fins? thats the amp, should have a bunch of wires in two harnesses connected to it (one is green and the other is blue i think), its helf on with a bracket with 2 10mm bolts, not too hard to get to
10) should wiggle out, useless piece of crap that makes stereo installs take 2 hours longer than they should
11) the radio works through the amp, one harness is car to amp (and radio signal to amp), thats the smaller one i believe, blue.
other is green, that is the power and such out to the radio, and power out to the speakers, should be the green clip it has the standard speaker wires for toyota in it (green/lt blue, purple/pink, black/red, yellow/red, as well as a brown and grey wire, and a thicker white wire with blue stripe, as wella s some others i was too lazy to figure out what they did.
12) so:
white w/ blue stripe=12v power
grey=switching 12v
green/lt blue=-/+ front driver
purple/pink=-/+ front passenger
red/black=-/+ rear passenger
yellow/black=-/+rear driver
(im sure of the front and rear, + and -, not so much the passenger and driver, if the speakers work, touch the wires to a 9v and see what speaker pops.)
13) these wires basically need to be extended to your new radio in your dash. it is the bare necessities for operation, i dont know which one is power antenna or illumination, if you feel like waiting a while i'll confirm but from
training i think illumination is the green wire and power antenna is the black and red/pink and blue wires.
14) the dash is super easy to open, look at your vents, right above that where there is a seam between plastic around the rest of the dash, slide a knife or screwdriver in, pop it off, pop all around, and by the key, should click right out, the radio is held in with a few 10mm nuts
15) remove 10mm nuts, pop the ac/ect button panel out the back (it pops out, its hard, figure it out) and remove the 4 philips ehad screws holding the radio in, as wella s the orange plug and antenna (black wire)
16) this orange harness is garbage now, especially if you cut the wires out of the green harness for the amp, no going back, probably shouldve said that in the beginning, eh? and i know theres two separate but seeimingly identical orange harnesses in there, one isnt hooked up, i dont know what its for, probably 12 disk changer or some crap.
17 )screw your aftermarket radio in, pop the ect panel back in, connect your wires and antenna to the harness, and do everything in reverse to reinstall, take care with the clips, dont lose or break any, theyre kinda fragile
18) hope for the best.

as far as doors go, theyre easy

pop the little plastic pin on the edge enar the painted door, press the inside in and pry the outside up, unscrew philips head screws on bottom, pry the surround of the door handle out, ash tray and window control pup up (from the rear, makes it easier, sometimes you can even hit the clip and make it simple), pup the little plug in the door handel out and undo the bolt in it, as well as the bolt hidden where the window controls were, the panel should be hanging there, so pull the bottom out a few inches and push it up, should unhinge from the door and come off. the speaker is right there, 3 screws holds it on, wiring is simple, just remember your positive and negative.
