Default 99 avalon with bad 02 sensor

New to the boards, my 99 avalon xls has it's check engine light on. Mechanic says it's the O2 sensor, bank 2 sensor 1. Having a little trouble locating the unit, as well as the replacement part number. Can anyone help? Please? I'm looking for a diagram, instructions would be wonderful but not necessary, as well as direct fit replacement part number. Thanks in advance.

Scan down the forum list for the 12/25 entry CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. There I posted my experience with the O2 sensor on my 2002 AVALON. This information might help you with your 99 Avalon.
For part numbers, I did a search on GOOGLE for 2002 Avalon Oxygen Sensors. After some hunting around, I found the info that I needed for my 2002.
Good luck and let us know how you make out with this.

Auto Zone have replacement o2 sensors for the price you want. I had my three oxygen sensors replaced for my car about a year ago, and i had my mechanic get them from the dealer for about $120 each. I prefered to put toyota original equipment over aftermarket ones.

Just finished replacing an O2 sensor today on my 2003 avalon. The bank one ;series one sensor is on the back of the engine near the firewall. You can get a wrench on it from above. To change it use a 7/8 or 22 mm box end wrench with a long handle. Disconnect the connector and push the connector thru the box end. (The connector opens by sliding a small screw driver into the latch on the side of the connector). Then slide the box end down to and over the sensor. Access the sensor from the drivers side of the car with the hood open. Use liquid wrench and heat to move it. Once it moves start wiggling the wrench up and down and it will break free.

Best to use mechanics gloves to keep your hands safe.

This is a much better description than you will get in the Haynes manual.

Installation is easy just the reverse. Plan on two hours or less. Now that I have done it I would do it again. You don't have to access from under the car. The box end wrench is the key here.

Good luck
