This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.

I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

Considering Abandoning Current Testing

Posted 03-27-2009 at 02:10 AM by Highwaylizard
Well (you know it is a deep subject) I have been considering suspending my testing of the Fitch Fuel Catalyst. This thought has been on my mind for a couple of weeks now. Currently I am just over the 6,000 mile mark in my self-proscribed 10,000 mile test of the Fitch.

A good portion of me feels that the Fitch has demonstrated both an improvement in fuel economy as well as longevity. My eagerness to move on to the next set of modifications combined with the need for better fuel economy

MPG Numbers 3-25-2009B

Posted 03-27-2009 at 02:06 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:

  • 113.2 miles
  • 7.353 gallons.5916 increase in MPG since last fill up
  • 15.3951 MPG
  • All highway with no trailer
These numbers are a little better. These numbers were generated on a freeway run from the Shell gas station on 116th Street in Fishers, Indiana to Marion, Indiana and back. Both fill-ups were performed at the same pump at this station. To be fair, there was pretty strong wind going both ways. I noticed that the semis around me were having...

MPG Numbers 3-25-2009A

Posted 03-27-2009 at 02:01 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:

  • 72.3 miles
  • 4.884 gallons
  • 3.9510 increase in MPG since last fill up
  • 14.8034 MPG
  • All city without trailer

Certainly not where I wanted the numbers to be without pulling a trailer. I really expected the numbers to be up in the 16 MPG range at this point and I am wondering if I should remove the ram air scoop from the truck. There are two variables that may be affecting the mileage and both are related to the ram air scoop. One is that I recently...

MPG Numbers 3-23-2009

Posted 03-24-2009 at 03:39 PM by Highwaylizard
Updated 03-25-2009 at 11:33 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 108.6 miles
  • 10.007 gallons
  • 7.9361 decrease in MPG since last fill up
  • 10.8524 MPG
  • All city with a trailer loaded
Well if this is not getting your stuff knocked in the dirt I do not know what is. Previous mileage was 18.7885 MPG but that was all free way and no trailer. These numbers are pulling a trailer loaded at least half of those miles, in the city, stoplight to stoplight. To say that these numbers are disgusting is an understatement.

MPG Numbers 3-21-2009C

Posted 03-22-2009 at 12:48 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:

  • 58 miles
  • 3.087 gallons
  • 4.3550 increase in MPG since last fill up
  • 18.7885 MPG
  • All highway

Absolutely the very best mileage I have ever recorded for the truck. This was done after adding a curved piece of PVC pipe to the inside of the scoop to help smooth out the air flow and direct it into the pipe that takes the air from the scoop to the air box. The gasoline used in this run and the two previous runs was taken from the same pump (pump #7...
