This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.

I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

MPG Numbers 3-21-2009B

Posted 03-22-2009 at 12:41 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:

  • 135.4 miles
  • 9.381 gallons
  • .1316 decrease in MPG since last fill up
  • 14.4334 MPG
  • All highway

Rather disappointed to see these numbers in light of all the miles being highway. I filled up this morning on our way out to see our accountant who is about 65 miles from here. The run was made at 75 MPG with the cruise control on from Indianapolis to Batesville, Indiana. I had expected to see the numbers go up but taking into consideration the results...

These numbers were generated after connecting my ram air scoop directly to my air box. I remove the snorkel and plumbed the tube from the ram air scoop directly into the air box. The tube used to run up in the fender but did not connect to the air box – it just fed the fender well with fresh outside air.

Since we are back to landscaping I hitched the trailer...

These numbers were generated after our return home from the Florida Keys and an ECU reset. Initially the ECU reset seemed to do the trick with my mileage returning to 16+ MPG for the first half a tank of fuel. I went 200 miles on exactly a half a tank of fuel. Then, almost as if on cue, the Check Engine Light came on at 202 miles on the Trip Odometer and my fuel...

General Observations 3-16-2009

Posted 03-16-2009 at 10:35 PM by Highwaylizard
In looking over the fuel economy numbers over the past several tanks of fuel I am disappointed in what I am seeing. A review of my records shows an erratic pattern in my miles per gallon starting with plummet from a tank of Shitgo gas, peaking, plummeting again and culminating at my present mileage.

On our trip back from the Florida Keys we ran up the Florida Turnpike where the only gas available is Shitgo. Here is a quick over view of the numbers since we left Florida to present:...

General Observations 3-09-2009

As of this writing the Fitch Fuel Catalyst has been installed on my Tundra for 5,235.7 miles. I installed the Fitch on my truck directly before we embarked on our annual run to the Florida Keys which is approximately 1400 miles each way. We stayed there for two months and racked up a grand total of 5,151.9 trip related miles.

Recently I have experienced a very significant drop in fuel economy. I theorize this is in response to the ECU’s inability to adequately adjust to the rapid
