This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.

I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

Updated 06-29-2009 at 03:21 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 279.9 miles
  • All in town with trailer
  • 17.617 gallons Shell87
  • 15.8881 MPG
  • 1.3400 increase in MPG since last of in town trailer driving

These numbers are excellent considering that at least half of the miles were generated pulling the trailer. Even so, since I am behind in writing these posts I noticed that in the next set of mileage numbers my passenger side oxygen sensor on the passenger exhaust manifold failed. I am wondering if there is a correlation...

MPG Numbers 6-09-2009

Posted 06-24-2009 at 10:25 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 328.8 miles all city driving
  • Mostly trailer
  • 22.601 gallons Shell87
  • 14.5480 MPG
  • .3198 decrease in MPG since last of highway driving
Not much of anything remarkable here beyond the fact that I used to get around 12 miles to the gallon when pulling a trailer and now I am conistently getting in the fourteens. The new gears along with the other modifications I have done really have made a difference. I am looking forward to the next couple of modifications as...

MPG Numbers 6-06-2009

Posted 06-23-2009 at 10:38 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 274.4 miles all city driving
  • Mostly trailer
  • 18.456 gallons Shell87
  • 14.8678 MPG
  • 1.1186 increase in MPG since last of city driving with trailer

These numbers were generated pulling the trailer on the mowing route. While unremarkable on the surface the numbers are pretty good considering that this was all stoplight to stoplight, one property to the next. The course of the mowing route entails some twenty-six properties which means twenty-six start-ups...

MPG Numbers 6-04-2009

Posted 06-23-2009 at 10:37 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • All city driving mostly trailer with very heavy trailer because of tree work
  • 282 miles
  • 20.307 gallons Shell87
  • 13.8868 MPG
  • .9521 increase in MPG since last of city driving with the trailer

These miles were generated with all city driving while pulling a trailer for most of those miles. At least 75 of those miles were with the trailer very heavily loaded while we were doing tree work. For the heavy trailer/tree work scenario the truck was loaded...

MPG Numbers 6-01-2009

Updated 06-23-2009 at 10:34 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 210.6 miles all highway driving
  • Cruise control set at 75 MPH
  • 11.559 gallons Shell87
  • 18.2196 MPG
  • 1.3341 increase in MPG since last of highway driving

I am quite pleased with these numbers and I really think the golden 20 MPG figure is attainable at this point. I recently changed out my 4:10 gears for a set of 3:91 gears which has made a significant difference in my fuel economy. This was not exactly by choice but rather, as a result...
