This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.

I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

Thanks for looking and ask any questions you may have.

General Observations 5-31-2009

Posted 06-02-2009 at 10:12 PM by Highwaylizard
Well here it is the end of another month and it has been a month full of mechanical failures, bonehead decisions, and expensive repairs.

The numbers for the month are as follows:
  • Total driven miles 2,247.9
  • Total gallons of fuel consumed 150.758
Breaking those numbers down I find that:

Mixed Driving:
  • 1203.9 total miles of mixed driving for the month
  • 79.672 total gallons of fuel burned in mixed driving burned
  • 15.1107 average MPG in mixed driving

MPG Numbers 5-30-2009

Posted 06-02-2009 at 10:06 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • First 20 miles were city driving – the remainder are highway
  • 210.6 miles
  • 13.096 gallons Shell87
  • 16.0812 MPG.0147 decrease in MPG since last of city driving with trailer for part of the distance driven

These miles were generated on a highway run from Indianapolis to Battle Creek, Michigan. The first 20 miles were generated in town running last minute errands to the bank, two grocery stores, and the gas station to clean my windshield. The entire highway...

Ram Air Intake Update 5-29-2009

Posted 05-29-2009 at 10:11 PM by Highwaylizard
I am finally ready to move forward with the latest, and hopefully the final, set of revisions to the ram air intake. Several changes will be reflected in this final rendition which are the result of experience and input from another member on the Tundra Solutions Forum.

The first change is the incorporation of a curve on the floor of the scoop that will assist the incoming air in transitioning from the horizontal flow to the vertical uptake tube that leads to the air box. This curve...

MPG Numbers 5-29-2009

Posted 05-29-2009 at 10:01 PM by Highwaylizard
Updated 05-29-2009 at 11:15 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • City driving with trailer for half the miles
  • 218.2 miles
  • 15.870 gallons Shell87
  • 14.1420 MPG
  • .0622 increase in MPG since last of city driving with trailer for part of the distance driven

These are the first miles on the truck since having the stock 4:10 gears replaced with 3:91 gears. I had expected the city mileage to suffer a bit from the change over and I knew the fuel economy pulling the trailer would take a hit as well. Overall I am neither...

MPG Numbers 5-19-2009

Posted 05-23-2009 at 12:16 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • Mixed (City/Highway) driving with trailer for half the miles
  • 195.2 miles
  • 13.613 gallons Shell87
  • 14.3392 MPG
  • .9841 decrease in MPG since last of mixed driving

The slow decline in fuel economy numbers continues. As I have noted in previous posts I think the decline is attributable to the problems with my rear differential. With the truck in the shop all I can do at this point is wait and hope. I am taking this unexpected down time to catch up on...
