This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.

I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

Thanks for looking and ask any questions you may have.

Filled up today:
  • All city driving with no trailer for any of the miles
  • 330.4 miles
  • 17.073 gallons Shell87
  • 14.8161 MPG
  • .5254 decrease in MPG since last of all city driving with no trailer

Still not too bad as far as in town numbers go. These numbers reflect some hot rodding and horsing around. My foolie exhaust has been on the truck for some time now but I really have not had adequate time to play around with it. Despite my age I still drive like I am...

Updated 05-25-2009 at 12:18 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • All city driving with trailer for all of the miles
  • 237.7 miles
  • 11.589 gallons Shell87
  • 12.9347 MPG
  • .3396 decrease in MPG since last of all city and all trailer driving

I must admit that the gradual decline with my numbers has had me confused. I really feel that at this time of the year, with warmer temperatures, that my numbers should be gradually climbing. I think a small portion of the decrease can be attributed to the addition of a few lawn...

MPG Numbers 5-11-2009

Posted 05-22-2009 at 11:51 PM by Highwaylizard
Updated 05-23-2009 at 12:03 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • Mixed (City/Highway) driving with some trailer
  • 280.8 miles
  • 18.325 gallons Shell87
  • 15.3233 MPG
  • 1.4008 increase in MPG since last of mixed driving

These numbers were generated pulling a trailer in town and without the trailer on the highway. The majority of the miles were in town and close to half of those in town miles involved pulling the trailer. Overall these numbers are not too bad.

I have not posted in awhile which deserves...

MPG Numbers 5-07-2009

Posted 05-09-2009 at 10:31 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • Mixed (City/Highway) driving with trailer for half the miles
  • 237.7 miles
  • 17.073 gallons Shell87
  • 13.9226 MPG
  • 2.0275 decrease in MPG since last of mixed driving
These numbers were generated pulling the trailer in town for half of the logged miles and the other half were from running on the highway without the trailer. The in-town trailer pulling was running the landscaping route with full complement of lawn mowing equipment from property to property....

MPG Numbers 5-03-2009

Posted 05-09-2009 at 03:33 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • Mixed driving no trailer
  • 216.8 miles
  • 13.520 gallons Shell87
  • 16.0355 MPG
  • .6259 decrease in MPG since last of mixed driving

These numbers are not too bad for mixed driving. I am not sure the percentage of highway miles or city miles but if I had to guess I would say these miles are pretty evenly split. I did not pull the trailer for any of these miles.

I am still trying to track down the cause of the “popping” noise emanating from...
