This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.

I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

Thanks for looking and ask any questions you may have.

Filled up today:
  • 130.0 miles
  • 8.531 gallons
  • 1.5604 increase in MPG since last fill up
  • 15.2835 MPG
  • Nearly all highway driving
These numbers were generated on a follow-up run to the numbers generated from last night’s run. Initially we thought we had turned in 22+ MPG on last night’s run. Today after getting in from this run I found a fuel receipt in my wallet from yesterday. There were two fill-ups yesterday; one at 3:35 pm and the second one at 11:06 pm. Inadvertently I overlooked...

Filled up today:
  • 140.9 miles
  • 9.570 gallons
  • 1.9383 decrease in MPG since last fill up
  • 14.7231 MPG
  • Nearly all highway driving
We ran from Indianapolis to Batesville, Indiana and back home again. I filled up at pump number 12 at the Shell gas station just outside of the I-465 loop on I-74. On the return trip I again filled up at pump number 12 at the same gas station.

These numbers are completely unacceptable to me, even in light of the extreme crosswinds and heavy...

MPG Numbers 4-10-2009A

Filled up today:

  • 106.2 miles
  • 6.374 gallons
  • 3.5518 increase in MPG since last fill up
  • 16.6614 MPG
  • Mostly city driving with some highway driving

This run was nearly all city miles with the exception of about forty miles of highway driving. I filled up at pump number 12 at the Shell gas station just outside of the I-465 loop on I-74. I did not have trailer for any of these miles

Even though these numbers are fairly respectable, especially...

MPG Numbers 4-9-2009

Posted 04-11-2009 at 04:13 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 205.9 miles
  • 15.706 gallons
  • 1.8952 decrease in MPG since last fill up
  • 13.1096 MPG
  • Nearly all city driving
Not exactly the kinds of numbers I wanted to see in city driving. I pulled the trailer for at least half of these miles and the trailer was loaded for at least half of the miles I pulled it for. With the return numbers on the mileage bouncing all over the charts it is difficult to pinpoint the true fuel economy. I know that while pulling the trailer I...

MPG Numbers 4-6-2009

Posted 04-06-2009 at 04:59 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:

  • 262.9 miles
  • 17.521 gallons
  • 1.7483 increase in MPG since last fill up
  • 15.0049 MPG
  • Mostly highway miles with some city driving

These numbers were generated mostly on the highway with less than 25% of them being in town driving. On the face these numbers are not too bad but for those of you who have been following my progress and advancements with the ram air intake scoop the numbers are far below what I would have expected with freeway...
