This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.

I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

MPG Numbers 6-06-2009

Posted 06-23-2009 at 10:38 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 274.4 miles all city driving
  • Mostly trailer
  • 18.456 gallons Shell87
  • 14.8678 MPG
  • 1.1186 increase in MPG since last of city driving with trailer

These numbers were generated pulling the trailer on the mowing route. While unremarkable on the surface the numbers are pretty good considering that this was all stoplight to stoplight, one property to the next. The course of the mowing route entails some twenty-six properties which means twenty-six start-ups and shutdowns over approximately 100 miles. The balance of the mileage was in city driving doing estimates and actual landscaping.

I had really expected to see the in-town trailer pulling numbers take a hit with the new gears but so far they have gone up and stayed up. I am pretty happy with the new set-up but I do have a little concern about how the final gear ratio will affect the transmission. Hopefully I will not have to worry about this too much longer as I have the business up for sale and should not be pulling the trailer much longer.

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to email us. For more information about my testing take a look at my personal blog at Tundra Fuel Economy. Feel free to drop in, look around, and drop some comments or ask questions.
