This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.

I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

MPG Numbers 6-17-2009

Updated 06-29-2009 at 03:21 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 247.4 miles
  • Some trailer with the air conditioning running
  • 16.363 gallons Shell87
  • 15.1195 MPG
  • 1.4121 increase in MPG since last of highway driving
These numbers were generated in town while pulling the trailer for the landscaping business. While an improvement over the previous set of numbers the cause of their improvement in light of the failed O2 sensor and while running the air conditioner for the first time this year is a mystery. I am wondering if the cause may be gas from different gas stations.

I have no other observations to offer on these numbers at this time while I try and find the cause for the excellent return. Considering that the MPG’s on this fill-up while pulling a trailer and running the air conditioner place me squarely in the mid-range of what I normally get running without the trailer and no AC it is very confusing. I am hoping I do not have the passenger side catalytic convertor going bad on me. I seem to recall that immediately prior to losing the driver’s side cat I had some widely fluctuating numbers. Time will tell.

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to email us. For more information about my testing take a look at my personal blog at Tundra Fuel Economy. Feel free to drop in, look around, and drop some comments or ask questions.
