This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.

I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

MPG Numbers 6-22-2009

Posted 06-30-2009 at 11:53 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 86.7 miles all city driving
  • No trailer A/C all the time
  • 5.717 gallons Shell87
  • 15.1653 MPG
  • No previous city without trailer and air conditioning to compare it to
Normally I run the truck down to at least a half a tank before fueling up. This fill-up was done in order to top the truck off prior to hitting the highway to Dunes National Park in northern Indiana. There is nothing else to report on as these numbers are right where they should be. I am still pleased that they are in the fifteens with the air conditioner running and a fair amount of idling. I realize that idling the truck with the air running is not exactly environmentally friendly but as I mentioned in a previous post I do this for health reasons. Due to a heat stroke I suffered two summers ago I am a less and less tolerant of the heat. Since I work outside, and according to everyone who knows me I work harder than anyone they have ever seen, being able to take refuge in the air conditioning of the truck really makes it possible for me to keep going like I do.

As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to email us. For more information about my testing take a look at my personal blog at Tundra Fuel Economy. Feel free to drop in, look around, and drop some comments or ask questions.
