This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.
I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

MPG Numbers 6-22-2009B
Posted 07-02-2009 at 12:21 AM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
These numbers are actually a little bit better than they appear on the surface. The first 22 miles were in town with a few stops. The truck idled at those stops for at least ten minutes with the air conditioner running full blast. Close to the end of the run we pulled over at a rest stop so everyone could go pee and get a bite to eat. Again the truck idled for at least ten minutes with the air conditioner running. The last 10 miles or so were spent lost in an unfamiliar town while trying to find our way back onto the highway after taking the wrong exit. To top it all off I discovered that my rear passenger tire was 15 pounds below pressure.
I really think that on a perfect run I would have cracked 19 miles per gallon. In light of these numbers I think summer grade fuel has arrived in Indianapolis. With the new and improved ram air scoop being fabricated and an O2 sensor that needs to go in it may be possible that I will crack the 19 MPG ceiling before the next round of major modifications. On the list is the electric fan conversion, headers, and possibly some aluminum rims. At this point money is pretty tight so those will have to wait.
As always, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to email us. For more information about my testing or to see pictures take a look at my personal blog at Tundra Fuel Economy. Feel free to drop in, look around, and drop some comments or ask questions.
