This blog is about my search for better fuel economy for my truck. I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra Double cab with a V8 engine, four wheel drive, and a four speed automatic transmission. Of all the years the Tundra has been available it appears that the 2004 DC truck, because of its size and engine/transmission configuration, gets the worst mileage of all the Tundras. The Gross Vehicle Weight of the truck is 6600 pounds and the EPA fuel economy rating for the truck is 14 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the freeway. In all honesty these fuel economy figures are both generous and unrealistic.

I have a personal Blog with more detailed information about my testing and my findings. Detailed spreadsheets of my fuel economy and test conditions can be emailed from my email account at highwaylizard@gmail.com

Ram Air Intake Scoop Observations 4-4-2009

Posted 04-06-2009 at 12:00 AM by Highwaylizard
My testing of the ram air intake scoop has been very promising in the latest stages. Posting two tanks at 18+ MPG on the freeway has been encouraging. However, the current tank of fuel has been mostly highway miles without a trailer and the numbers at this particular juncture are only in the 15 MPG range. The final numbers will only be known when I refill the tank sometime tomorrow.

Today it has rained heavily here in Indianapolis and on the way home from getting a new cell phone...

MPG Numbers 4-4-2009

Posted 04-05-2009 at 09:32 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:

  • 133.6 miles
  • 10.078 gallons
  • 4.9765 decrease in MPG since last fill up
  • 13.2566 MPG
  • All City Driving
All in town and pulling a trailer for at least half of the miles. The significant decrease in mileage reflects the difference between the last set of numbers which were generated on the highway and this most recent set of numbers that are the result of pulling a trailer in town. Overall I am not too disappointed with these numbers.

General Observations 3-31-2009

Posted 03-31-2009 at 09:26 PM by Highwaylizard
Here it is the end of yet another month so it is time to post my general observations of the fuel economy numbers generated for the month. It has been a challenging month of erratic fuel economy numbers first as a result of a failed catalytic converter and then as a consequence of pulling the landscaping trailer for the business.

In looking over the spreadsheet for the month I find the following raw data:
  • Total driven miles 2602.7
  • Total gallons of fuel burned 180.042

MPG Numbers 3-31-2009B

Posted 03-31-2009 at 07:35 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 129.2 miles
  • 7.086 gallons
  • 4.7331 increase in MPG since last fill up
  • 18.2331 MPG
  • All highway with no trailer
These numbers were generated on a run that I went on at the last minute. I took my wife up to work this morning for a number of reasons. Her Jeep is having transmission problems and she has been pretty sick and did not feel safe enough to drive. In this economy she cannot call off work so I took her in. The plan was for me and my son to spend...

MPG Numbers 3-31-2009A

Posted 03-31-2009 at 07:28 PM by Highwaylizard
Updated 03-31-2009 at 08:32 PM by Highwaylizard
Filled up today:
  • 173.3 miles
  • 12.837 gallons
  • .8950 decrease in MPG since last fill up
  • 3.5000 MPG
  • All city pulling trailer half the time
These numbers were generated over a six day period in-town pulling a trailer for at least half of those miles and at least half of the trailer miles were loaded. I am glad to see the MPG’s coming up a little since the last set of numbers with a trailer. I am still a little concerned with the low numbers and especially with the numbers...
