Disney Trip

Posted 09-24-2007 at 03:23 PM by TundraSoul
We've been in Orlando at Disney: http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/wdw...rkOverviewPage for the past week and will return home tomorrow (Tuesday). The parks are always fun with some new attractions and interests but I can't help but come away feeling like I need a vacation for the vacation.

The weather IMO has been unusually hot and steamy especially in the afternoon. So by mid day you find yourself tired, thirsty and hungry most of the time. The sun is relentless except when it decides to pour down for a few minutes and turn the park into a sauna.

A number of updated attractions you must visit include:

Epcot: Test Track, The Seas with Nemo and friends, and Mission Space.

Magic Kingdom: Monsters Inc Laugh Factory, Space Mountain and Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin.

Disney MGM Studios: Tower of Terror (if you have a strong heart), Rock 'n' Rollercoaster, and Playhouse Disney (for the kids).

Disney's Animal Kingdom: Expedition Everest (strong heart required), Finding Nemo, It's tough to be a Bug, and Kilmanjaro Safari.

The best water park is Blizzard Beach. If you stay on property check out the pool at the Yacht Club, one of the best pools I've ever seen.

A couple of tips. The Disney transportation system can be slow at times to allow anywhere from 45 minutes to 1:30 minutes to move from your resort to any park. Carry lots of drinks, and the lightest stroller if you have small children. Walking the parks everyday can become a chore so plan to take breaks and get plenty of sleep.

Overweight Americans

My recent trip to Disney provided me with a good view of just how fat Americans really are. The CDC lists some alarming facts:
  • Percent of noninstitutionalized adults age 20 years and over who are overweight or obese: 66.3
  • Percent of noninstitutionalized adults age 20 years and over who are obese: 32
  • Percent of adolescents age 12-19 years who are overweight: 17
  • Percent of children age 6-11 years who are overweight: 19
Given the number of motorized wheel chairs present at Disney, I believe the numbers being reported by the CDC are even higher. It saddens me to see children and teenagers who are already disadvantaged because of their weight. Children emulate their parents and when a parent lets a child become 20, 30 or more pounds overweight, that's simply child neglect in my opinion.

Using the Disney transportation system was a slow process that was compounded by the fact that every bus I used usually had a wheelchair occupant aboard it.

People are not allowed to board the bus until the wheelchair is loaded first. In every instance, the person in the wheelchair was not physically disabled - just seriously overweight.

We bought the pre-paid Disney dining plan, which costs $39.00 per person, per day. This gives you one 4-item table service at a sit-down restaurant, one 3-item cafeteria service at your resort, and one snack. The portions at the table service were large enough to feed two adult men. So much food went uneaten because we had no interest in eating a pound and a half of whatever was on our plate. So I guess Americans are not totally to blame, the portions at table service restaurants is seriously out of control.

Great. Finally someone gets a first hand experience of the obese America problem. So now that you've witnessed this, do you still believe the problem is an "epidemic" or a "disease" or do you think it resides in the home and the choices we make for ourselves?

I personally believe that it is the individual making the wrong choices and not having self-control. If the child becomes more than 20lbs overweight, it's the parents fault. There is no reason your kid needs a half pound burger slopped with cheese and mayonaise, a half pound of deep fried carbs covered in salt, and a 2liter soda for lunch.

We have alternatives to fast food, make use of them!
