Default Squeaky Brakes

Ok,

having a brake problem... I installed new brake pads and had my rotors skimmed last spring (may). Within a week or so the truck developed a squeak from the driver’s side front - passenger side is OK. Not having a lot of time on my hands I would work on it every so often. Well here I am 4 months later with squeaky brakes and it's driving me crazy... Any ideas??

Here are the things I have done and the symptoms...

I have re-installed the pads 3 times.

I have used anti squeak grease on the anti-squeak shims

A week or so ago I even swapped the passenger and drive's pads. The squeak is still on the driver's side!

I don't think it's the type of pad since its only driver's side and I have swapped pads.

Each time I do any work the squeak will return within a few days – after the pads set in again.

The squeak is a not constant. Its is a squeak – squeak – squeak... it is definitely a single spot that is causing the squeak.

It is speed dependant – meaning the faster I drive the quicker it squeaks.

When I press the brakes it stops once the pads engage the rotor.

Could it be the rotors? Maybe the driver side was not turned square?

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions...

TIM

MEvang will become famous soon enough.

Squeals come from vibrations and all disc brake pads vibrate. The engineering trick here is to make the vibration happen in a range that can't be heard by the driver or anyone else for that matter.
Something has up set the balance here and it could be the fact you had the rotors machined. Now my guess is they were turned on a bench lath. This is a recipe for disaster as in most cases the operator doesn't do the job right.
I think they turned runout into your rotor and this is causing your problem. I think if you install new rotors and make sure they are indexed. Use Toyota pads and shims your squeal will be gone.

Had the same issue with my 2000. Turned out to be a broken spring on the pads. $3.00 at the dealer! Had just put new pads and rotors and still squeals and screeches (more prominant when reversing)and replacing the springs(sort of "W" shaped) fixed them. They weaken with age and snap easily when re-installing them. Good luck, Jon 2000 Tundra

Thanks Jon,

I know the springs you speak of. I replaced all those last time I put the brake pads in. So I know those are all fine. Unfortunately, I think MEvang is correct and I am going to have to get new rotors. I think they didn't turn them correctly.

Nice $100 screw up.

Thanks again for your thoughts..
