As there is no way to know for sure if the bearings are damaged, unfortunately I think your best bet is to replace them.

Just wondering if anyone else has used the timken rear wheel bearings 511031? Local shop doesn't have them listed and they usually carry a lot of timken products. Is there a replacement application? Or should I go with Koyo. I believe that's what is being sold at the dealer.

The reason I need new bearings is because of a noise that started the other day driving on the freeway. At low speeds, it's a soft swooshing noise. Similar to how a taco'ed bike rim would sound against v-brakes. At first I thought it was the drum brakes. Pulled the drums and they were fine. Next, I assumed the worst and thought it was the carrier (either ring and pinion or the detroit locker). Drained the fluid and found some fine dust and more than usual. Pulled the third member and inspected all the teeth on the ring and pinion. All there and no chips. Decided to look in the housing and found the spring retainer for the axle seal near the end of the splines of the axle shaft. Pulled the complete driver shaft/brake assembly out and noticed the brake drum assumbly have a lot of play. I'm thinking the bearing ruined the axle seal.

Good thing, I have extra seals and o-rings to replace that but, now I need new bearings. Going to replace both inner bearings just in case.

I replaced the seals and bearings on my truck 2 years ago when I bought the truck they were leaking because of a vent plugged with mud. It's alway a good idea to turn the breather at each oil change to be sure it's not plugged with mud or rust. At that time I used the hydraulic press at the job to remove the retaining rings and abs gear I have been able to remove everything without cutting them. I removed the first ring and abs gear together then the c-clip and finally the second ring with the bearing. The position of the second retaining rig is really important and the tolerance is really small (1mm). I bought the seals at the dealer and the bearings at a local parts store 36$ CND for the bearings instead of 100+ at the dealer. Same brand and same part number.
