Question Can Dirty Brakes cause an accident???

Last night I was driving my 2001 Tundra down my driveway and the rear brakes locked up, and I slid down my drive......If I had been out on a highway or something I think I would have crashed. Mechanic took apart the brakes, and said they were very dirty (off raoding every weekend). He also asked if the truck had been wet, and if it were cold (not driven far) when it happened. The answer was yes, I had washed it, and I only drove it up a short distance. Do you all think that dirty brakes can cause such a scary thing? I trust my mechanic, but I wanted to hear your ideas??

    Thank very much

Sounds reasonable to me. I have not really ever heard of it though. When I was younger and done lots of 4 wheelin' my brakes would not work really well untill I could drive it a while and pressure wash it, but I never had the brakes to lock up.
