Default Soft Brake Pedal - Is this normal?

At first I thought my brakes themselves were soft, so I took them into the dealership. Nope, they were just fine and had hardly any wear on them.

The interesting, and concerning, thing is my pedal has a substantial amount of play to it. I can depress it almost a good inch and a half before I feel any resistance from the brakes. Hey, the brakes work great at stopping the truck, just wanted them to engage sooner.

Also, it has a creaking like sound to it as well. Is this all normal, and should I take it in?

Mine does the same thing and it's normal. As for the squeak/creak just lube the shaft at the end of the pedal and it'll cease.

I was just a bit worried, because the pedal in my parents' F-150 (same year as mine) and my Mom's '98 Camry do not have the amount of play that mine has.

I put mine in the shop for the squeaking creaking brake pedal twice, first time they changed the brake booster, second time they changed the brake pedal bushings and it has now been quiet ever since.

Be sure your rear brakes are properly adjusted. These brakes are self-adjusted by use of the parking brake. If you don't use your parking brake frequently, it is easy to adjust by hand by pulling the parking brake cable several times on each side at each rear wheel.

Once the brakes engage, does the pedal feel spongy? Does if firm up if you pump the pedal? That's air. There are five bleed points...each wheel and the rear brake proportioning valve. The proportioning valve can be slow to get all the air out.

Might want to try going stainless, ive heard that helps stiffen up the pedal feel. Ill be doing that this summer.

I also adjusted the bottle screw for the rear brake adjuster (just under your driver's die door on the fram rail)

I've had brake fluid go bad over time (cuz I left the cap off too long on a humid day)

If your truck is lifted in the rear, you may need to adjust the load sensing valve in the rear (on the diff) to compensate for the raised rear.

my brakes dont auto adjust. i use the parking brake everytime i put the thing in park. i just now get the rear adjusted ( the little star thing on the drum) everytime i have the tires balanced.

i wish they worked as they are supposed to.... they never have. after about 5-6k miles... it really starts to dip to the front under normal braking.

What would cause the brake pedal to feel "soft" eventhough everything is fine?

I am not sure, but my brakes seem to change the way they brake the truck. Sometimes especially when I first get in it it will feel like the brakes are weak then it seems to improve the more I drive it.
