Default Brake Warning Lights Stays On

The brake warning indicator lights says lit on my 2004 Seqoia with 31,000 miles. Fluid is correct and brake pads are in good shape. Took it to the dealer -which always frightens me, and they got no codes related to brake issues.

Any ideas what it could be? Of course the dealer could not figure it out.

Thanks for the help.

If we're talking about the ABS light, let me know and I'll post the diagnostic section from the FSM.

If we're talking about the red brake light that comes on when you set the emergency brake, here are two things to check.

1. The switch on the emergency brake mechanism may be closed due to something interfering with the switch mechanism. get in there and look for the switch and manually activate it a couple of times and see if you can get the light to go off.

2. There is a float switch in the master cyllinder that triggers the light when the brake fluid level gets low. Problem is that the float can get stuck in the down position. To check this, take the cap off of the master cyllinder and pop out the strainer. You will see a circle type thing in the cyllinder. If it is floating at the top of the fluid, it's in the right place. If not, take a screwdriver or something similar and push on the float until it floats up to the top. Usually, the float only gets stuck if you drain the MC and then fill it back up. It's possible that it could have gotten stuck in the down position if the truck was bouncing around a lot.

Shall36,

It is the red brake light. I will check the two conditions you mentioned and let you all know.

Thanks for the input.

Do y'all think it could be cold related? Yesterday was the first cold(below freezing) morning and my red light was on-set and released emer. brake to no avail. It went off after about 10 minutes, then when I came out of the day care it came on again for about 5 minutes.

Mine is doing the same thing. First really cold day I released the brake the light
stayed on then went off later and comes on from time to time no pattern that I
can see. Let me know what you found out.

Thanks, Chris

The brake light in my 2003 Sequoia (39000 miles) also randomly comes on and goes off. It doesn't seem to matter if it's cold or not. The other thing that bothers me is last night I was stuck in traffic (brake light was on) but before I hit the traffic jam I was doing about 60 for about 5 miles and when I slowed in traffic I smelled brakes burninig really bad. I don't know if it was me or another car in front of me. After sitting in traffic for 15 minutes I exited the highway. Stopped at a gas station - fueled up. When I started the engine the light went off and all was okay. Time for a visit to the dealer.

you have a 99.9% chance that it is low on brake fluid.
add some. yspert

All,

I had the same issue on my 04 Sequoia. The red brake warning light would come on intermittenly. This started happening about 2 years ago and got the regular recommendations that it was low on fluid. Still kept happening and next service interval was told that it needed new brakes. Had new brakes installed and still kept happening. This last time I brought it in they said that the ABS computer needed replacing (approx. $1,500). It is now out of warranty even though it was under warranty the last few times I took it in. They said that they would pay for the part but not the labor since each time I had brought it in before it was either low on fluid or needed new brakes. Anyone with similar experiences? Thanks.

All,

I have a 2006 Toyota Sequoia 4x2 and I have the same issue with the brake light. Also, I got a warning this morning that looked like this (!)- Check Tire Inflation. The tire pressure is fine. The brake light hasn't come on in a while. I am also having a issue with my braking. When I brake, whether I am going 5 mph in a parking lot or 60 on the highway, the car shakes really really bad and makes a banging noise. Are these all related?
