BrakesDiscussions about the brake system in your vehicle and brake products.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra Brake TSB", within the Brakes forum, part of the Technical & Vehicle Assistance Forums category.
Who did you take it to? I don't think I want to take mine where you got yours done. Personaly, I don't think we have any great dealers here in San Diego. I would like to find a competent one.
I went to Stevens Creek Toyota here in San Jose with the TSB in hand. I forgot to re-read the posts here to have a credible story about my "symptoms" but it went OK. They said they had done a few of them. I am bringing the truck in Monday.
My original pads are on the wear warning tabs now (21,000 miles).

I took it to Kearny Mesa Toyota. It's the only dealer I feel halfway comfortable with.
I'm going back this week to get the rocker arms replaced that they damaged doing the TSB. I was told that BR999 was there code for brakes and the TSB was done. Now there wavering on the issue.
First off, My stock brakes seemed ok. I had very little vibration. I asked them to check out my truck for front vibration. They came back and setup a date for the TSB. That was Monday 12/02/02
Today 12/04/02
I just had the Toyota Brake TSB Br004-02 done on my truck. The new caliper is bigger and longer almost by an inch (I think). During the work I had them replace my stock front rotors with Power Stop Cross-drilled and slotted rotors. I had new Porterfield AP 812 R-4s Carbon-Kevlar front pads but due to the new caliper they didn't fit. I asked the toyota guy what the new front brake pad number was and he said 01465-35250. I'm now looking for a Porterfield Carbon-Kevlar front pads replacement that will fit the new stock pad. I also had Porterfield 589 R-4s Carbon-Kevlar rear shoes put on the rear.
So far everything seems fine. I'm still bedding in the Front rotors.
From what I can see they replaced my Caliper's, Disc cover's, Wheel Bearing's, Front Brake Tube and smaller items like cotter pin's, seal and some Brake Fluid.
They were not going to replace the stock rotors or pads. it seems like they only do that if you rotors are in bad shape.
If I have time I'll take some pictures.
Does anyone think stock pads in the front and Porterfield 589 R-4s Carbon-Kevlar rear shoes will cause a problem?
I called Toyota 1-800-GO-Toyota, after discussing my issue with customer relations, I now have a new appointment with John Elway Toyota to apply the rear TSB and fix the rocker arms which they beat the poop out of when installing the TSB for the Front BR004-02......
Call Toyota if you have any questions, don't let the dealer (as they tried with me) to say the TSB for the rear does not apply....
Toyota is a great product, the dealerships lack the same....
This question is for all you folks that have had the TSB completed. I bought my truck used with 90K on the ODO. How can I tell if the brake TSB is on board? I am starting to get a shudder when stopping and want to make sure I don't need to follow up on the TSB for brake problems.
Thanks in advance,

Jeff,
The latest TSB was just made available in September of this year, so if you've owned it at least three months, you can be assured that the TSB has not been done. I'm guessing here, but I'd say your only hope is that this TSB situation turns into a full blown recall by Toyota (which it should, but I'm skeptical that it ever will)
Went to my local dealer last week to again complain about my braking concerns, they said that they we waiting for the "special tool" needed and that they would call me when it came in. Well they called (relayed message to my daughter) Tuesday of this week and said part was in, I called and they said bring it in on Thursday. So I get it in at 1:00 Thurs, they say they would have it done by the end of day (I'm thinking right!), my wife picks me up and within an hour they call and say oops there's another tool they need and they can't do the job, don't know when it will get in, maybe around the first of Jan! Whats going on? Are these dealers having to borrow/share these tools? I wish I had another dealer in town but I don't.
Originally posted by TD I don't think any dealer will do the brake TSB on your truck with over 100k miles! (unless you pay for it)
I figured they wouldn't pay for it but I'd rest better knowing the TSB had been completed and end the brake shudder. Bought the Truck in April, so now I am sure it doesn't have the TSB.
Wonder how much it cost? I hate to ask. Wonder if my friendly toyota dealer would split the cost, yeah right
Thanks,

Good God! I'll live with the shudder for a while longer, like til the lugnuts are falling off, before I spend that much money. Maybe I could get out of it for half that by doing my own labor.
"Saved you all that money?" Yeah, that's to cover up all the gripes and headaches we give them for the problem in the first place.

I let you know how it turns out.
I just got my truck back. They did the fronts, new calipers, pads, bearings, seals etc. Looks like they turned the rotors.
No problem after I said I felt vibration in the wheel when braking.
bought new 5/00. Vibe problems pretty much eliminated with help of Tundra Solutions alignment specs and a qualified tech on the Force balancer. Brakes still aproblem. Since then, Rotors have been turned twice, replaced once.
Old, front and Rear TSB performed with new drums shoes etc, out of warranty-no charge. 5-6k after each repair attempt the brake shudder would start again. I heard about the new TSB in Sept, Thanks Tundra Solutions. Took it in last month with 67k miles and the machine shop destroyed the spindle/steering knuckle(?) while removing the bearings. Naturally, the spindle was on backorder. 17 days later I've got my truck back with new calipers/pads/bearings/spindle etc. I think they just turned the rotor, it was pretty new still.
I just did 2000 miles and Wow, this is the way the truck should have been all along! No vibes, no pulling, no steering wheel trying to jump out of my hands on braking. She just feels TIGHT. Seems like it take a bit more steering effort?
I sure hope this lasts! They didn't give me a $#$total, but i fugured 1500-2000. I paid a customer participation fee of $100 plus alignment and force balance. I have done most all my service at this dealer.
So, i'm very happy to say the least.
Bring on the '04 with 4 doors and a regular bed!!!
