Originally posted by MTTUNDRA I'm a little lost here about how a TSB works. Can anyone fill me in? I've got a 2000 with about 41,000 miles on it, no more warranty, and my brakes suck also. So does this mean I can go down to my local dealer, have them fix my brakes and have Toyota pay the tab?
If you read the TSB's, they state that they will be honored according to a customer's specific complaint for 3 yrs/36k miles.
Having said that, it seems like there are a lot of people here that have complained prior to the 3/36 or have had major brake work done before their warranty expired. So that may be how some people are getting additional TSB work done for free. Plus, it only makes sense that Toyota honor them if they want to be customer service friendly.
On the other hand, it was like pulling teeth to get my moronic service mananger to honor the TSB INSIDE the 3/36 warranty period!
Good luck...it's worth a shot!
Oh, and remember, not every dealership is the same...if you fail at one, try another.

Why Is That? Is it just Toyota that has terrirble customer service! I have had nothing but problems for warranty work! Just like when I blew my Head Gasket on my 1996 Tacoma that was only 1 year old and had less than 19k miles on it. When I brought the truck in for the TSB on Head Gaskets for all V6 Toyota Trucks and 4Runners from 1989-1996, the service manager accused me of not having my vehicle properly serviced. Hmmm. had all the oil changes done every 3k miles. Not properly serviced? Not sure what services I could have done on the truck to prevent the HEAD GASKET TO BLOW, at 19k miles! Oh! I guess I could of had the transmission oil changed, that would have fixed that. NOT! What is that all about? Toyota, please stop harrasing your customers! Toyota, you screwed up, now step up to the plate and fix it!
Ok, I'm sorry for going off, but Toyota just makes me so mad sometimes. I have spent over a $125,000 dollars on Toyota's over the last 16 years and will probably spend another Million over the next 50 years. I expect better service than this.
I think its just as much a dealer thing as a TMC issue. I took my 94 truck in with 60,000 miles for the V6 head gasket issue. I was the second owner and no extended warranty. I had all the maintencne receipts and the dealer didn't even look those. He just verified that it had not already been done (he could tell by just looking). He apologized, said he would need the vehicle overnight, took me down the hall where they set me up with a rental. All this on a truck that had out of state plates.
This same dealership put on new rotors and pads at my first complaint of the slightest brake vibration on my Tundra. Finding the right dealer who will treat you fairly can be invaluable, not just from a cost standpoint but a mental one. I know that isn't possible for some due to location.
If I had a Tundra with the least amount of vibration and had it addressed during the warranty then I would expect nothing less than the TSB. If I never had a brake issue with 60,000 miles and experienced the brake problem then I would hope the goodwill of the dealership would cover some of the expense. After all, it does seem that some trucks are simply unaffected, probably a majority.
Regarding Hollywoods post about the rear brakes making a noise:
I just took my 2000 Tundra to the dealer, with 35,850 miles, and gave them a laundry list. They said that they would fix it, but would have to order some parts. Unfortunately, the service manager is clueless, and couldn't tell me what they found or how they were going to fix it. I didn't know if anyone else had experienced this noise, or if it was really a problem or a quirk of the Tundra. My noise is a bit of a thud or clunk when the brakes are applied while backing up.
As far as a TSB - can someone point me to a web site - the one that I used to go to is 404. I had my front brakes redone once already with approx 20,000, and complained again about grabbing/shimmy. They are going to replace rotors and pads, but I would like to see what the TSB for that says and also see if there is one for the backing up issue.
Barkerbo,
Try the web site www.alldata.com, I don't see anything on the brake TSB, but they have TSB's listed and recall notices listed.
If the brake TSB is fairly recent, maybe the site has not been updated.
I just got a call from the dealer and he said that Tyota is going to replace the break parts and install the new and improved parts for free and give me a car to use while the service work is being done. The parts are on order. My 2000 tunda has 48,000 miles.
I've had mine in 4 different times for brake work, the last time was at 45, 000 miles, new front pads, turned rotors. Now at 53,000, I was getting the 'pulsing' at light to medium braking, especially from about 50 mph down, when brakes were already warm to hot.
The dealer had to call the factory, but I got the ok for the new TSB.
After complaints started coming in, I think Toyota realized that their initial design was building up too much heat, but that they waited too long to start doing something about it, hoping that it was very isolated.
My parts were ordered a week ago, still not in, my service tech said it was probably the demand for the kit, I told him, "but I thought Toyota said they have no problem", he just laughed.
I think most of the difficulties people are having with the dealers getting the work done are the dealer themselves, IMHO.

Went to the dealer last thursday for my 22,500 mi. service. Within an hour the service guy told me that my front brake pads need to be replace. and they will cut the rotors. I was shocked. He told me that i don't need to change it yet but he recommends it because the brake pad is thinner than the brake pad metal back. It will be ok @ least for another 2,000 to 4,000 miles. SO i just decided- to change it. just to be on the safe side. its better to be safe than sorry.
When it was done, i felt a vabraition while braking @ around 40 to 50 mi./hr. So i called them right away and told them. So the service guy told me to bring it back to them so that they could check it.
Brought it back this morning and the result was that there is a TSB on it. They will replace the rotors, caliper, pads, wheel bearing, and for the rear are the brake drum and shoe. They didn't even check it. He told me that toyota informed them that if any customer claimed that there brakes are having problems, toyota instructed them to replace those parts. WOW what a relief. they told me that they ordered my parts alrealy and when it comes in, they will provide me with a car while they do work on my truck. Customer service at its best.
Yep, they did mine last week no questions asked. I have almost 39,000 miles on my truck and it is technically out of warranty. Good to see Toyota responding to the problem-too bad it took almost 3 years.
Here is what they did.
Replaced
Left and Right Caliper
Left and Right Brake Pads
Left and Right Bearings
All clips and springs
Left and Right REAR drums
Left and Right REAR pads
Turned rotors
New brake fluid
Truck brakes better than it did new!
My Tundra had 34k miles on it and was 2.5 years old when I brought it in for the TSB. I got hassled at first by the service manager about my oversize tires (265/75/16s) and that Toyota wouldn't warranty the work. But they did, and thats another story.
I had posted earlier regarding my rear brakes. Turns out it’s my front brakes that are the problem. I have an appointment tomorrow morning and I’m going to tell them I did research and found a TSB regarding front breaks. I will let you all know how it goes.
I Just spoke with Chad at Toyota's CSC (800-331-4331). Because my truck is at 70K, "No assistance at this point". My case number is 200210250576.
He said any previous problems with the brakes have no enfluence on the coverage. The current TSB is only a TSB and not a recall. Therefore, toyota does not have to cover it. My truck would be welcomed at the dealership for repair as long as I pay for it.
Anybody want to venture what I might have to say about Toyota??
Well I have decided to place on the tailgate and sides:
A very Large "P", followed by a very large lemon, followed by a very large "S". Directly below that will be the dealership's name.
Call him back. Make sure you have in your case file that you consider it a "serious safety issue," and inform them you will be filing a complaint with the NHSTA regarding the issue. Again, its not about getting free brakes, its about you safety!!!
